COMMUNITY SERVICES

Soccer Tournament - Youth soccer was the biggest game in town over the Labor Day Weekend as young teams took over the Central Park Sports Complex. North Huntington Beach Futbol hosted one of the largest youth soccer tournaments of the year using the fields at the Sports Complex. Teams participating in the tournament came from throughout the state of California as well as Arizona and Nevada. What the teams found were great weather, great fields, and a great time. North Huntington Beach Futbol did a good job with the tournament as well as the clean up after the event. They have already expressed interest in using the facility for their 2005 tournament.

Core Tour - This weekend, September 10 - 12, the Core Tour at the city beach will feature extreme sports competition, live music, and cash prizes. Bike, inline, and skateboard exhibitions and competitions run throughout the weekend. The event is free to spectators. Go to www.coretour.com for more information.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Citizens Assist in Saving Choking Man - On Saturday, September 4, the Fire Department responded to a call regarding a choking man at Seacliff Country Club. Upon arrival, the Paramedics found an elderly man semi-conscious on the dining room floor. The man, who was attending a wedding reception, was in the middle of dinner when a guest at the same table noticed he was turning blue. One of the guests attempted the Heimlich maneuver several times before the man collapsed to the floor. Several other guests also came to his aid including a nurse. No pulse was noted, and CPR was started for a short time. A large piece of meat that was stuck in the man's throat was removed. By this time, the Paramedics arrived on scene, stabilized the patient, and transported him to the hospital. When the Paramedics left the hospital, the man was alert and talking to the doctor. Quick actions by these wedding guests saved his life.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Helicopter Activity During August - The month of August had a dramatic beginning for the Air Unit. HB1 responded to a call of a possible drowning at a residence in Huntington Harbour. The helicopter arrived over the scene while ground units were still a distance away, and the determination was immediately made to land in the street to render assistance. Officer McNaughton was able to assist a citizen who was delivering CPR to the 10-year-old victim. Happily she survived with no ill effects.

Officers Paholski and Reed assisted detectives in locating a parolee who was in possession of weapons and drugs. After the suspect was taken into custody, he told detectives he would have tried to flee in his vehicle but gave up when he knew the helicopter was overhead.

Officers Catalano and Lynn responded to an injury traffic collision at Beach and PCH that turned out to be a hit and run. The crew located the suspect in the beach parking lot and directed units who took the suspect into custody for hit and run and DUI. This was one of nine DUI arrests made by the Air Unit during August.

HBPD Receives Approval as an Automated External Defibrillator Provider - The Orange County Emergency Medical Services has approved the Police Department's application to become a provider for Automated External Defibrillators (AED). The AED is an electronic device that is capable of evaluating a possible cardiac patient's heart rhythm and, when necessary, deliver a shock to aid in the resuscitation of the patient. Over the next several months, all Police Department employees will receive training in the use of the AED and will become certified users. The Police Department facility will have AED's placed on each floor and in the jail.
