Softball College Showcase Tournament at the Central Park Sports Complex - Girls Fast pitch softball was the activity of the weekend throughout the city of Huntington Beach. The Orange County Batbusters hosted a College Showcase Tournament the weekend of October 20, 21, and 22 throughout the city. Part of their Surf City Tournament Series, this event used all of the fields at the Central Park Sports Complex, Worthy, Greer, Golden West College, and other locations in the city. This National College Showcase Tournament featured girl's fast pitch softball teams from all over the nation, state, and county. Nearly 80 different teams from Arizona, New York, New Jersey, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, Washington, and California came to Huntington Beach for this showcase tournament. This tournament featured some of the nation's top softball players and gave college scouts from around the United States an opportunity to view and evaluate the top prospects in the nation. What everyone found was great weather and a great time for all. There were many compliments on the Central Park Sports Complex. The OC Batbusters will be hosting their next event in this Surf City Tournament Series in the city in November.

Art of the Brew - The Huntington Beach Art Center presents the Fifth Annual Art of the Brew, a fun and funky celebration of the process of creating the best brews in town! Please join us on Thursday, October 26, from 6-8 p.m., for a micro brew tasting event featuring four local breweries: BJ's Restaurant and Brewery, BrewBakers, the Huntington Beach Beer Company, and Oggi's Pizza and Brewing Company. They will be presenting their special microbrews, as well as a taste of their best beer munchies. The brewmasters describe the art of the brewing process, and the audience gets to vote for their favorite beer. Raffle prizes add to the fun. General admission is $15 per person. Call 374-1650 for more information.

Ricky Ramos Named Acting Senior Planner - The Planning Department is pleased to announce that Ricky Ramos is now the acting Senior Planner. In the new position, some of the new responsibilities that he will assume include coordinating the Planning Commission packet (starting with the second meeting in November), administering the Administrative Permit process, and organizing the department's internal Project Review meetings. Ricky has worked in the Planning Department for nine years.

PUBLIC WORKS

More Water Transmission Main Work - A $3.5 million maintenance project will begin next month on two of the city's large water mains. The 36-inch and 42-inch transmission mains move water from the northern to the central portion of the city. They were constructed in 1964 and 1972, respectively. The pipelines join at the intersection of Warner Avenue and Springdale Street. This project combines two elements: corrosion protection as outlined in the Water Master Plan, and routine replacement of existing valves and other components. The work will begin in November near the intersections of Springdale Street/McFadden Avenue and Springdale Street/Heil Avenue. There will be partial road closures on Springdale from Bolsa Avenue to Slater Avenue.
