COMMUNITY SERVICES

Special Olympics at the HCPSC - On Saturday, October 15, the Special Olympics of Orange County hosted their annual Sports Competition at the Central Park Sports Complex. Participants came from many cities throughout the southland, ranging from Ventura to San Diego Counties. The Olympians found great weather, great facilities, and were greeted by nearly 300 volunteers helping out with the event. The competition featured 12 soccer teams, 6 softball teams, and 23 bike riders competing in various divisions throughout the day. Organizers of the event were so impressed with the Central Park Sports Complex that they have already booked their event for 2006 and are looking to expand it next year.

Santa Claus to Visit Huntington Beach Homes - City officials have once again extended a special invitation for Santa Claus to visit the city. As he has done in the past, Santa has agreed to visit children in their homes to share his special season's greetings, give candy canes, and make memorable moments. If you would like to have Kris Kringle make an appearance at your home or holiday party, the Community Services Department gladly schedules the visits for Santa. The home visits will begin on December 2 and end on December 22. Old Saint Nick's busy schedule will only allow him to make the visits between 6 and 9 p.m., Wednesdays through Fridays; and noon to 9 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays. A nominal fee of $30 is charged for each 15-minute visit. It is recommended that there be no more than five children per 15-minute visit, and extended visits can be arranged. For more information or to schedule a visit, contact the Community Services Department at 536-5486.

Santa's Helpers - If you need some time for Christmas shopping, here's a perfect opportunity. Murdy Community Center is offering a three-week, one and a half hour class for three to six-year olds where they will be making and wrapping gifts for their whole family. Classes are on Wednesdays, November 30, December 7, and December 14, from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. Snacks are also provided, and the fee is $35 plus a $20 material fee.

Jazz at the Center - The Huntington Beach Art Center presents Jazz at the Center featuring the hot rhythms of Scott Martin's Latin Soul Band. After performing for 12 years with the great Pancho Sanchez, saxophonist Martin demonstrates an impeccable feel for the music and a true passion for Latin Jazz. The concert will be held on Sunday, October 23, from 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. The music series Live at the Center is presented in an intimate cabaret style setting, which offers outstanding jazz, blues, and classical performances throughout the year. Live at the Center is made possible through the generous support of the Boeing Company. Call the Art Center at 374-1650 for information and reservations.

Flu Shots for Seniors - Huntington Beach Senior Transportation is excited to offer transportation to Huntington Beach Hospital's flu clinic on Saturday, October 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. This is the first time Huntington Beach Senior Services and Huntington Beach Hospital have partnered to offer this service to city seniors. In a unique service, volunteer drivers will transport the seniors from their homes to Huntington Beach Hospital where a nurse will board the bus and give the shots to the seated seniors, and then the seniors will be bussed home. No standing in line for the frail elderly. Huntington Beach Senior Transportation can accommodate passengers with wheelchairs or scooters. To reserve a ride, call 374-1742.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

New CAD/RMS System - This past week, the department cutover to our new Computer Aided Dispatch and Records Management System occurred at 6 a.m. on Monday, with the RMS following shortly thereafter. Only a few minor problems occurred with the cutover, and they are being worked on. This project has been four years in development. This system will greatly enhance our ability to retrieve information regarding crime trends as well as quickly providing information to the officers out on patrol. Our IS staff spent a great deal of time at the department this past weekend to ensure a successful cutover and did a great job.

Big Counterfeit Seizure - Detectives from the department joined with investigators from private industry and conducted an undercover operation at the Golden West Swap Meet targeting counterfeit merchandise. They seized approximately $180,000 worth of counterfeit purses, watches, sunglasses, and music CD's. Some of the counterfeits resembled Yves St. Lauren, Oakley, Gucci, Rolex, etc. Counterfeiting is an annual, multi-billion dollar loss to the respective industries. Two arrests were made, and the arrestees could face up to five years in prison. Detectives have planned several more operations in the near future.
