COMMUNITY SERVICES

Parking & Camping - The Sunset Vista RV Campground was at full capacity for the Thanksgiving holiday (11/15/06 to 11/26/06). Always a popular spot to spend Thanksgiving, campers made reservations last month in the early hours of the morning to be guaranteed a campsite. Visitors from out of state, as well as locals, enjoyed great weather and an ocean atmosphere while cooking their Thanksgiving meals. Sunset Vista camping information is available on the city's website at www.surfcity-hb.org or by calling 536-5280.

Marine Safety - On November 19, Marine Safety Officer Mike Bartlett treated a surfer whose left eye and eyelid were punctured and lacerated by the tip of his surfboard. The tip of the surfboard was broken off by the impact of the collision. Huntington Beach Paramedics transported the patient to the UCI Trauma Center. Marine Safety statistics for October 16 through November 26 were as follows: Attendance - 612,740; Public Contacts - 15,685; Rescues - 7; Preventative Actions - 872; Law Enforcement Contacts - 4,221; Medical Aids - 43; Lost & Found Persons - 4; Wildlife Calls - 4; Public Education Lectures/Students - 8/2,200; Drownings - 0.

The Huntington Beach Art Center - Please join us for the Newport Repertory Theatre presentation of the holiday classic, It's a Wonderful Life, which opens Thursday, November 30, and continues through Sunday, December 3. Treat yourselves and your loved ones to the magic of live theater with this classic story of love, hope, and family - a performance that will delight audiences of all ages! For tickets and information, please call (949) 633-1580.

Rainbow Disposal Assists Project Self-Sufficiency - Project Self-Sufficiency is pleased to say thank you to Ron Shenkman (Rainbow Disposal) for the purchase of a table for 10 at the Soroptimist's Home for the Holidays party on December 13 at the Hilton Waterfront Beach Resort. The Soroptimists are a local group of women who support many charities in Huntington Beach, including Project Self-Sufficiency. This means that 10 single parents get to get dressed up for a lovely evening, courtesy of Mr. Shenkman, and enjoy a grand Holiday Christmas party. In turn, the Soroptimists give Educational Scholarships to PS-S participants at the June Recognition Program with funds raised from this event.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Economic Development New Employees - On Monday, November 27, the Economic Development Department was happy to announce its two newest employees. Paul Da Veiga has rejoined the city of Huntington Beach team as Economic Development's Redevelopment Project Manager. Paul previously was Associate Planner with our Planning Department, and most recently he worked as Senior Planner with the city of Seal Beach. Tina Krause is our new Real Property Agent, and Tina comes from the State Board of Equalization in Norwalk as Associate Real Property Appraiser. Paul can be reached on extension 5544, and Tina is at 1529. Please stop by and introduce yourself.

PUBLIC WORKS

State Infrastructure Bonds Approved - Voters decided to invest $42.7 billion in California's aging infrastructure system and facilities. All six infrastructure bond measures on the November ballot were approved. The California Infrastructure Coalition (CIC), of which the city is a member, was instrumental in sponsoring the measures. The public works package allocates $19.9 billion for public transportation and relieving traffic congestion; $10.4 billion for school repairs and expansion; $4.1 billion for levee improvements and flood control; $2.85 billion for affordable-housing projects; and $5.4 billion for water quality improvements and the protection of natural resources. The measure also includes a law that requires the state to use the gasoline tax only on transportation projects. It is likely that some of the bond funds will be made available through competitive grant programs that will benefit the city of Huntington Beach in areas such as street improvements, flood control, and water quality projects.
