COMMUNITY SERVICES
Students/Seniors Interact - On Thursday, May 19, 80 Huntington Beach High School sophomores joined with 80 senior citizens at Rodgers Seniors' Center for over an hour and discussed World War II. The meeting was an intergenerational project between Mayor Jill Hardy, who is a teacher at HBHS, and the city of Huntington Beach Senior Services. The students were part of the Model United Nations (MUN) Program at HBHS. The project was a great success. Seniors shared their experiences of life during WWII, while the students asked questions and took notes. The outcome of the interviews will be published as a collection of stories written by the students. Many of the seniors were enlightened about the younger generation, noting the maturity and intelligence level. "The way television and the media portray teenagers as criminals is way off-base," remarked Ida Bollinger, a volunteer at Senior Services. "These kids were very smart and had great manners." All participants enjoyed lunch together before the students headed back to school. This program was part of several projects at Senior Services celebrating May as Older Americans Month.

FIRE DEPARTMENT
FEMA Reimbursement Received - On May 25, the Emergency Services Office finalized a closeout of the city's January storm claim. The total eligible damages & response costs were $151,976.89. Of that sum, FEMA will reimburse the city $113,982.67, which equals 75% of those costs. The state OES will return $28,495. 67, which is 18.75% of the total. Overall, the city will receive $142,478.34, and all monies will be returned to the General Fund. Special thanks should go to Jason Churchill, Ken Dills, and Jay Kleinheinz of Public Works; Larry Neishi of Community Services; Arnie Ross of Administrative Services; and Glorria Morrison and Will Schulz of the Fire Department. This group is now working with FEMA and state OES on reimbursements for the February storms.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Oakview Traffic Enforcement - This past week, the Police Department responded to calls received from citizens complaining about drivers stopping on Slater Avenue and surrounding streets in the Oakview area soliciting workers for hire. This solicitation by drivers causes a hazardous condition to other motorists who have to change lanes or stop to avoid the vehicles stopping in the traffic lanes. Traffic Bureau Officers, working cooperatively with Team COP, have focused efforts in the Oakview area educating drivers and issuing citations for traffic-related offenses on the streets in the area. Officers issued citations for stopping in traffic lanes and obstructing or blocking the traffic lanes. The department's effort will continue into the future.
Promotions - Senior Officers Terry Kayano and Greg Davis were promoted to the rank of Sergeant. Sergeant Davis has been at HBPD for approximately 15 years and worked as an FTO and in the Training Unit. Sergeant Kayano has been at HBPD for approximately 17 years and has worked as an FTO, Beach Detail Officer, and Footbeat Officer. Congratulations to both.
New Hires at HBPD - We recently hired three lateral police officers. Two of them are from neighboring agencies, and one is from outside the county. Officer Ronald Garwood comes to us from Westminster PD where he had nine years experience. Officer Michael Thomas comes to us from Riverside PD and has four years experience. Officer Ryan Reilly comes to us from Newport Beach PD where he has four years experience. We welcome them to HB.
PUBLIC WORKS
SCE Recognized Leader Award - Southern California Edison recently presented the Public Works Utilities Division with commendations as a Recognized Leader for our efforts to reduce electricity use during times of critical demand. The division participates in SCE's Demand Response Program. Three of the water utility's greatest electricity users were enrolled in the program: groundwater Wells 3 & 5; and the Edwards Hill Booster Station. The program is voluntary and provides significant cost incentives to the city should SCE request that we shed demand during peak periods, typically the summer months. Participants in the program are not required to reduce usage, but they receive the incentives if they can modify operations to do so. Due to the nature of the water system operation and the redundancy we have with other power sources (natural gas), there are times when these facilities could be shut down without any adverse affect to service.
