COMMUNITY SERVICES
Senior Transportation on the Go - On Saturday, May 13, Senior Services Transportation provided five volunteer drivers and a volunteer dispatcher for the 2006 Huntington Home Show benefiting the Huntington Beach Education Foundation (HBEF). The HBEF is an independent, community-based, nonprofit organization to benefit the Huntington Beach City School District. One hundred percent of the Home Show proceeds goes directly back into the schools. The drivers donated 28 hours of their time between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to shuttle 509 patrons from the Rodgers Seniors' Center parking lot to three tour homes located in the waterfront community. Because parking is an issue in this community, this service made the experience more enjoyable for the participants and reduced the impact on the neighborhoods. Huntington Beach Transportation has partnered with the community in other endeavors as well. The Transportation Division provided drivers and vehicles for the following: the Aloha Seniors Gourd Farm Field Trip to Wellborn Farms in Fallbrook, the spring Beach Cleanup sponsored by Simple Green, Youth in Government Day, the California Development Block Grant Committee tour, Huntington Beach Hospital's Flu Clinic, the July 4th Parade, and Senior Saturday.

PUBLIC WORKS
Downtown Water Main Replacement Update - A long-term project is underway to replace water lines in several of the downtown alleys. Existing water mains in these areas are 50 to 80-year-old cast iron pipes and have reached the end of their expected service. The pavement and drainage gutters in the alleys will also be replaced. The work will be staged so that the alley closures will not impact adjacent blocks simultaneously. Public Works Construction and Engineering staff have coordinated the project to have the minimum impact on residents in the area. Work will take place in one alley at a time. The alley will be closed during the day for two to five weeks, and closed completely for approximately one week during street construction. Parking accommodations for two vehicles per residence have been made, one on the street and one in the city parking structure. All affected residents have been notified that they may pick up the temporary parking permits at the Public Works counter in City Hall. Construction is progressing well, although numerous unmarked, unused oil lines have been encountered. Pavement in the alleys will be resurfaced upon completion of the water line installations.
