POLICE DEPARTMENT
Restoration Completed on Vintage Police Car - Anyone who has visited the Police Garage at the City Yard in the last few years has probably seen a 1948 Chevrolet in various stages of restoration. After a great deal of perseverance, and with a very limited budget, Huntington Beach Fleet Maintenance employees finished restoration on the vintage police car this week. The restoration of the vehicle was a project that took almost 10 years to complete. Fleet Maintenance personnel worked on this project as time permitted to minimize the expenses associated with the restoration. Craig Hunter, Craig Miller, Frank Davis, Jim Lee, and retired Crew Leader Sam Campolito put their love as well as their labor into making a wonderful car that will be used during the 4th of July Parade and during other ceremonial occasions.
PUBLIC WORKS
Water Well Construction Underway - At the May 17 City Council meeting, a contract was awarded for the construction of Well No. 12. This project is a major component of the 2000 Water Master Plan and will complete the expansion of groundwater pumping capacity recommended in that plan. The project site was acquired through a property exchange with McDonnell Douglas Corporation (Boeing). The well hole was constructed and test pumped in 1995. This project will construct the building and surface improvements, including a highly efficient electric motor with variable frequency drive. The city's participation in the "Savings by Design" program with Southern California Edison will result in an estimated power savings of 330,820 kwh per year for an annual savings of approximately $33,000. The project should be completed and the well operational by next spring. The total project cost is approximately $2 million.
COMMUNITY SERVICES
Summer Classes Have Arrived - The summer SANDS Bulletin is in the mail. As always, it's chockfull of special events, day camps, workshops, and instructional classes for everyone in the family. Mail-in registration continues now to June 2, with walk-in registration beginning June 15 at Murdy and Edison Community Centers, City Gym & Pool, Huntington Beach Art Center, and Rodgers Seniors' Center. Look for your bulletin in the mail or pick one up at City Hall or at any of the above locations.
Project Self-Sufficiency Donation - John Borak, with Time Warner Cable, has presented two Project Self-Sufficiency single parents with fantastic newer/used cars. Susan Edwards took Mira D. and Christine S. to Time Warner this week to pick up the automobiles, and they were thrilled. The cars are both six or seven-year-old Ford Taurus station wagons that had been previous "executive use" cars. Mira, the mother of two children, has been without a car for two months, and her life has been difficult. She is a full-time worker and attends college part-time. Christine, the mother of three, works part-time, attends college, and had an old van that a mechanic had declared irreparable. Their children were delighted when they saw the cars and could not believe their good fortune! The PS-S Program is fortunate to periodically have used cars donated to its participants, but the two cars from Time Warner are the very best the program has ever received. Mira D. and Christine S. are very grateful to Time Warner. Susan says she told John that she has a list of 14 other PS-S parents in need of automobiles!
Bright Outlook on Web Site - The Council On Aging publication, "Bright Outlook," is now available on the city's web site, www.surfcity-hb.org. The "Bright Outlook" provides information on Seniors' Center programs with upcoming events, information on clubs and activities, preventative health programs for the aging, and transportation services. This information is provided through interesting articles as well as a quick at-a-glance monthly calendar, making the information easy to retrieve. Thanks to Gisela Campagne, Randy Pesqueira, and Chris Cole for going the extra mile to put this information on the city's web site.
Summer Programs - Summer is almost here, and it's time to start making plans. The Community Services Department will be offering swim lessons and recreational swimming at Marina High School, Huntington Beach High School, and the City Gym & Pool. Registration for lessons at the high school pools will start on Saturday, June 5, at 9:00 a.m. Registration for lessons at Huntington will take place at Edison Community Center, and registration for Marina will take place at Marina High School. Classes will be available for all ages and abilities. The cost for 10 classes is $40. Semi-private lessons are also available at the high school pools. Please see the SANDS Bulletin for information on registration for City Gym & Pool programs. The Funtime Day Camp is one of the many fine day camps offered by the city. Children ages 6-12 spend the week in a flurry of activity. They spend time skating, going to the movies, visiting Boomer's, and swimming. Each Wednesday they go to an amusement park. Registration information for this and other day camps may also be found in the SANDS.
New Meals Assistant - Senior Services welcomes Patricia Gemmell to the Home Delivered Meal's Program. Currently, there are 155 clients receiving home-delivered meals. Patricia retired from the county of Orange and has been a volunteer escort on tours with the Travel Program at Rodgers. Patricia's excellent administrative and organizational skills, as well as her compassion for seniors, make her an ideal addition.
