COMMUNITY SERVICES
Ol' Fishin' Hole Derby - The Ol' Fishin' Hole Derby for children with disabilities was held on Friday, May 12. The event was held at Carr Park with 180 children participating. About 75 dedicated volunteers assisted them. This was a record-breaking year with the largest fish being a nine-pound carp caught by Mario Garcia. The school that caught the most fish was Schmidt, with 14 fish. Awards were also given to the top three students. This annual event is co-sponsored by the city of Huntington Beach and the Huntington Beach Kiwanis Club. MEO, HBFA, and MEA also donated funds to make this event possible. Huntington Beach Rotary Club provided lunch. The Huntington Beach Fishing Club sent many volunteers, and the Department of Fish & Game provided poles, fish, and volunteers. The children had a great time.

Huntington Beach Art Center - Don't miss the excitement on Friday, May 19, as auctioneer Dr. Carl Hartman hosts an evening of live bidding on contemporary art at the 6th Annual Benefit Art Auction. The celebration includes live entertainment as well as delectable fare and lush wines from some of the most unforgettable restaurants in town. The Annual Art Auction presents a wide variety of work by emerging and established artists with national and international renown. The auction benefits the Huntington Beach Art Center; which is an award-winning, not-for-profit, arts organization dedicated to serving the community. General admission is $50, HBAC Members $45. Call for details at (714) 374-1650.
Outdoor Installation at Art Center - Streaming, a temporary outdoor installation at the Huntington Beach Art Center, was created by British artist David French. The fluid shapes installed on the top and front of the building expand on French's use of polystyrene-based forms that have allusions to waves and other natural forms. Using the Art Center as a backdrop, the installation has the appearance of moving in, out, and through the building as if it were alive. Although alluding to natural phenomena, there is an "other worldly" quality to the forms as they pass through the building like a ghost traveling through a wall. The work can be seen as you drive past the Art Center, yet takes on a changing quality when viewed from a distance. This is a temporary public artwork that will be dismantled soon. Don't miss the opportunity to see this amazing piece.
PLANNING
Huntington Harbor Bay Club Specific Plan Amendment Update - On May 10, the Coastal Commission denied the Local Coastal Program Amendment to the Huntington Harbour Bay Club Specific Plan on a 5-4 vote. The Specific Plan amendment, which was approved by the City Council in April 2004, would have allowed up to 11 residential units to be developed on a 1.6-acre site in place of the existing banquet facilities and tennis courts. The project site is located on the north side of Warner Avenue approximately a quarter mile east of PCH The reason for denial is the loss of visitor serving use, which has a higher priority in the Coastal Act over private residential use.
Pacific City Hotel Update - On May 18, at 4 p.m., in room B-7, the Design Review Board will review the elevations, materials, and colors for a 165-room hotel within the Pacific City project area along Pacific Coast Highway between Huntington and First Streets. Makar Properties submitted the plans for the proposed hotel which will consist of 165 rooms (originally approved for 400 rooms). Plans for the hotel can be reviewed at the Planning Department counter prior to the meeting or at the meeting.
Planning Commission Study Session on Proposed Main/Crest Conservation District - The city has scheduled a review of the proposed Neighborhood Conservation Plan at a Planning Commission study session on Tuesday, June 13, at 5:15 p.m., in Room B-8 of City Hall. The purpose of the study session will be to review potential development standards aimed at preserving the character and traditional development pattern of the neighborhood in the general area of Main and Crest Streets.
PUBLIC WORKS
OCSD Bushard Trunk Line Work - Starting Monday, May 22, OCSD will begin construction work at the intersection of Bushard Street and Ellis Avenue in Fountain Valley. Construction work will require the intersection to be closed for nine consecutive months. While we understand that it can be an inconvenience to drivers, the closure will reduce the length of work in this intersection, which will in turn enhance pedestrian safety and reduce traffic congestion. Traffic signs have been posted and will be used to help direct traffic during the closure. Magnolia Street, Talbert Avenue, Brookhurst Street, and Garfield Avenue can be used as alternate routes. Access to all residential neighborhoods will be maintained at all times, and traffic will not be directed through residential neighborhoods. Construction is proceeding as planned on the Bushard project as work continues from Panacea Drive to Atlanta Avenue. Since work began on Monday, April 10, more than 800 feet of new pipeline have been installed. The road closure for this section of Bushard is expected to last approximately four to five months. For questions, call the project Community Liaison, Kira Erquiaga at (949) 413-7676.
