COMMUNITY SERVICES

Ol' Fishin' Hole Derby - The Ol' Fishin' Hole Derby for children with disabilities was held on Friday, May 6. The Derby was held at Carr Park with over 160 children participating. They were assisted by about 50 volunteers. The school with the most fish was Schmidt, which caught 15 pounds of catfish. Awards were also given to the top three students. This is an annual event co-sponsored by the city of Huntington Beach and the Huntington Beach Kiwanis Club. MEO and MEA also donated funds to make this event possible. Lunch was provided by the Huntington Beach Rotary Club. The Huntington Beach Fishing Club sent many volunteers. The Department of Fish & Game provided poles, fish, and volunteers. Community Services sends its appreciation to everyone who made this very worthwhile event possible.

Internships - Senior Services, through the Seniors' Outreach Center, offers internships for students in coordination with their studies at local universities in the fields of Human Services, Social Work, Psychology, and Recreation. Under the supervision of Michelle Yerke, lead social worker, student Ashley Torres completed 120 hours of internship this week, earning her certificate in gerontology and meeting the requirements for graduation this spring with a B.A. in Sociology from California State Long Beach. During her internship, Ashley shadowed and assisted staff and made follow-up visits and phone calls to elderly clients with complicated aging issues. Ashley became familiar with senior service providers in the community by attending networking meetings and workshops hosted by Senior Services and other county agencies. In addition, Ashley was given practical experience to learn about all services offered to Huntington Beach seniors. She delivered meals to homebound seniors, observed the transportation program, and participated with active seniors in the TLC lunch program, classes, and activities at Rodgers Seniors' Center. Huntington Beach Senior Services offers internships to local university students in order to benefit them educationally and provide insights for their future careers with the aging population.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

CERT Volunteer Honored - Phil Burtis, of the Huntington Beach CERT program, will receive the Certificate of Merit from the American Red Cross on May 22. This is the highest award that the Red Cross gives and is signed by the President of the United States. Phil will receive his Certificate of Merit at the Red Cross CPR Day at Angel Stadium and will be featured on ABC television as part of the Safe Summer program. Phil pulled a 10-year-old girl out of a spa when her hair became entangled in the drain. She was blue and not breathing. He administered CPR until the paramedics arrived. His CERT and Red Cross training gave him the skills he needed to save this little girl's life. This is another example of how important our public education programs are to the community.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

HB 1 April Stats - HB 1 assisted in several high profile incidents last month, two of which involved officers who had been shot. They assisted in the searches in La Habra where two officers were shot, and in Westminster where a Sergeant was shot. They responded to two calls involving missing juveniles. After giving an announcement over the PA system, the children were located by citizens. They were first on scene 98% of the time when they responded to calls for service and they made 27 felony arrests, 29 misdemeanor arrests, and issued 52 Traffic citations.

PUBLIC WORKS

Open House Meeting on I-405 Improvements - The Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) will hold a meeting on Wednesday, May 11, to unveil four possible alternatives for improving the 405 Freeway through Orange County. The meeting will be held at the Main Street Library, 525 Main Street, beginning at 5:00 p.m. OCTA staff and engineers will be on hand to answer questions and explain the recommended improvements. Regional Urban Water Management Plan Public Meeting - Every five years, the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC) and the water retailers and cities it serves update the Regional Urban Water Management Plan. This extensive effort, which includes virtually all of Orange County, is completed in consultation with other water management agencies and the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California. The plan ensures coordination between land use and water planning, and helps to further ensure a reliable supply of high-quality water to meet Orange County's current and future demand. The update of the fifth Regional Urban Water Management Plan is beginning, and all stakeholders and the general public are encouraged to participate in the planning process. To provide an analysis of the plan, which includes a review and assessment of potential supplies from Northern California and the Colorado River, local groundwater, recycled water, water transfers, seawater desalination, and the water saved as a result of best management practices and water use efficiency, MWDOC will hold a community meeting on:

Thursday, May 12, 6:00 -8:00 p.m.
Municipal Water District of Orange County
10500 Ellis Avenue, Fountain Valley

For additional information about the Regional Urban Water Management Plan or the Community Information Meeting, please contact Michelle Tuchman, Director of Public Affairs, at (714) 593-5014.

Water Consumption for April 2005 - Conservation Tip: landscaping benefits most from slow, thorough, infrequent watering. Minimize evaporation by watering in early morning or evening.
