CITY TREASURER

Investment Policy Certification Approval - The Association of Public Treasurers (APT) of the United States & Canada (US&C) certified the city of Huntington Beach's 05/06 Investment Policy. A team of reviewers from the Investment Policy Certification Committee reviewed the city's Investment Policy and approved the city's policy for the APT-US&C Investment Policy Certificate of Excellence Award. The association certifies approximately 30 agencies annually. A plaque will be presented to the city by the President of APT-US&C and the Investment Policy Certification Chairman at the APT-US&C Annual Conference in Memphis, TN in July 2006.

New $10 Bill - The US Treasury has redesigned this bill, and it was put into circulation on March 2. They have added additional security features such as ink that appears to change from copper to green with movement, a security thread embedded in the paper that spells out the denomination of the bill, and a watermark image of Treasury Secretary, Alexander Hamilton. In addition, tiny yellow 10s are printed on the back. Please alert your staff handling cash to this new bill.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Friday Nite Funtime Dance - Edison Community Center will hold its monthly dance on Friday, March 17, for developmentally disabled adults. Naturally, the theme will be St. Patrick's Day, and there will be a DJ and light refreshments. Please call the center at 960-8870 for more information.

Children's Book Clubs - The spring SANDS is offering two book clubs for young readers at Murdy Community Center. The first session for six to eight year olds begins April 5 at 3:30 p.m. This is a one-hour, four-class session to introduce children to the love of reading. The first through third grade participants will enjoy discussion, theme-oriented crafts, and snacks. On May 10, another four-class session begins for eight to eleven year olds at 3:30 p.m. where they will explore The Spiderwick Chronicles. At their first meeting, the third through sixth graders should bring, and have read, Spiderwick Chronicles - Book 1, The Field Guide. The fee for these classes is $35 plus a $10 materials fee.

Marine Safety Lifeguard Tryouts - For those interested in a challenging and rewarding job this summer, the city of Huntington Beach is seeking responsible men and women to provide first-line protection for the city's beaches. The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Operation will be holding tryouts for new ocean lifeguards on Sunday, March 19, at 8 a.m. The tryouts will be held at Lifeguard Headquarters located at 103 Pacific Coast Highway, one block south of the Huntington Beach Municipal Pier. The starting pay is $15.13 per hour, and all applicants must be 17 years of age by June 1, 2006. The tryouts consist of three physical events: a 1,000-yard ocean swim, a 500-yard ocean swim, and a 1,500-yard run-swim-run. All events are conducted in prevailing conditions around and through the Huntington Beach Pier. Applicants must satisfactorily complete all tryout events to be eligible for further consideration. Upon successful completion of the tryouts, up to 36 qualifiers will be allowed to register for the lifeguard candidate-training program. The training program will be held from April 8-15, and April 22 & 23. Applications are available at Lifeguard Headquarters or online at www.surfcity-hb.org/jobs. Huntington Beach Art Center - The Huntington Beach Art Center is opening its next exhibition with a reception for the artists on March 17 from 7-9 p.m. The exhibition features the works of four artists from the core faculties of Art Departments of Southern California Graduate Universities. A variety of media is explored, with large scale drawings by Joseph Biel, California State University Fullerton; acrylic paintings by Linda Day, California State University Long Beach; large scale mixed-media works on paper by Rebecca Hamm, Azusa Pacific University; and a site specific sand installation by Connie Zehr, Claremont Graduate University. The reception will include a panel discussion with the artists at 7 p.m. Call the Art Center for information at 374-1650.

PLANNING

Planning Department Annual Report Available - The Planning Department 2005 Annual Report is now available. The report describes the activities of the department for calendar year 2005 and the organizational and procedural aspects of the planning and development review process. It also is required to comply with the California Government Code. Hard copies are available in the Planning Department. New Faces in Planning - The Planning Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Jennifer Villasenor as the new Associate Planner. Jennifer comes to the city of Huntington Beach from the city of Bell Gardens. She has over five years of experience in the planning profession and has also worked for the cities of Rosemead and El Monte. Jennifer will be assigned to the Advance Planning Division. Jennifer is tentatively slated to start her tenure with the city on March 16. Planning is also proud to announce the promotion of Rami Talleh to Associate Planner effective March 13. Rami has been with the city for the past five years and will continue to work in the Current Planning Division.
