ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Mixed Use Project Highlighted – This past Sunday’s issue of the Los Angeles Times Real Estate Section featured a front-page article on mixed-use projects being done where old, underperforming strip malls are being redeveloped into attractive complexes that blend residential and commercial. Huntington Beach is discussed in the article with the award winning mixed-use Plaza Almeria development on Main Street cited as a successful project.

PUBLIC WORKS

Water Quality Test Results – The Public Works Utilities Division has received the results of the EPA’s Unregulated Contaminants Monitoring Rule (UCMR) program analysis of the city’s groundwater well system. The program monitored for EPA’s “List 1” of 11 organic chemicals, including perchlorate and MTBE, over the last three years. We are pleased to announce that all wells were found to be “non-detect” for all 11 chemicals. In addition, the EPA randomly selected Huntington Beach for testing for their “List 2” of synthetic organic chemicals. Again, all wells were found to be “non-detect.” The city obtains roughly 66% of its water supply from groundwater wells located in the city.

Bushard Sewer Line Update - The large sewer line installation by the Orange County Sanitation District requires the following street closures to continue until further notice. These closures and detours will remain in place 24 hours a day:

Banning Street between Brookhurst and Bushard – Banning will be fully closed to traffic from the Marblehead – Tide Lane intersection to Bushard Street intersection. Bushard will be fully closed to traffic from the Banning intersection to the Drumbeat Drive intersection. Rambler Drive, Landfall Drive, and Mokihana Drive will be closed at Bushard to both incoming and outgoing traffic.

Bushard Street/Adams Intersection – Bushard will be fully closed to traffic between the Adams Avenue intersection and Cornwall Drive intersection. Traffic coming from Adams will have access to and from the neighborhood via Gloucester Lane and Derbyshire Lane. Traffic coming from Yorktown Avenue will have access to the neighborhood via Bushard Street. Traffic traveling both east and west on Adams will be able to continue through the intersection, but left turns from westbound Adams into Bushard will be prohibited.

COMMUNITY SERVICES

Senior Services Welcomes Ray Adams – Ray Adams joined Transportation in February as a part-time dispatcher. He will be a great asset to the program and comes with more than 14 years of transportation and dispatch experience with O.C.T.A., Dial-A-Ride, and Access. To provide more than 260 rides for Huntington Beach seniors per day, Senior Service dispatchers route eight wheelchair-accessible vehicles to locations throughout Huntington Beach as well as to Fountain Valley Hospital and Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach. By radio, dispatchers keep in constant communication with the 30 volunteer drivers and five staff drivers. In addition, dispatchers respond to over 100 phone calls per day from seniors in the community booking their transportation needs. Senior Services is fortunate to add Ray to the demanding and vital Senior Transportation Center.

Spring is Coming – With spring around the corner, residents received the Spring Recreational Bulletin last week, which is chock full of city news; information on city services, recreational facilities, special events/day camps, workshops, and classes which start in early April. Mail-in registration is currently taking place until March 24, with walk-in registration beginning March 30.

Marine Safety - The USSF Western Region Surf Contest will be held south of the Huntington Beach Municipal Pier on March 6-7. Marine Safety statistics for February 2004 were as follows: Attendance - 278,636; Public Contacts - 9,321; Rescues - 4; Preventative Actions - 173; Law Enforcement Contacts - 903; Medical Aids - 13; Lost & Found Persons - 4; Wildlife Calls - 4.
