COMMUNITY SERVICES

Jazz at the Center - The Huntington Beach Art Center will present Jazz at the Center on Sunday, June 27, from 4:00 – 6:30 p.m. Jazz at its best will take the stage when vocalist Sandy Graham, backed by renowned pianist Gerald Wiggins with Richard Simon on bass and Ralph Penland on drums, perform in an intimate, cabaret style setting. Sheer elegance, sensuous, warm, funny and fun describe Sandy’s confident style. She sets the mood and tells a story with every song. Sandy’s subtle phrasing and silky voice make her a true jazz singer. Don’t miss this incomparable musical experience! Call the Art Center for reservations and information at (714) 374-1650.

Medicare Discount Cards - Senior Services Supervisor Randy Pesqueira, with Social Workers Beverly Schulte and Michelle Yerke, attended an informative Health Insurance Counseling Advocacy Program (HICAP) sponsored training on the new Medicare-approved discount cards. With this training, Senior Services will be able to successfully answer client and participant questions, dispel myths, and alleviate concerns about the confusing changes. To initially reach as broad a group as possible, Rodgers Seniors’ Center invited HICAP to give a presentation on the Medicare Drug Discount Card to Huntington Beach seniors. In addition, an article on the Medicare Discount Card will be published in the July Bright Outlook.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

CDBG Enhancement Areas - The Enhancement Areas, determined by Census 2000, are the city's eight geographic areas eligible for Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) activities. Projects located in these areas must be for the general benefit of the residents. Citywide activities and services are available to residents who meet HUD income standards. Detailed maps of the areas are available at the city's website, www.surfcity-hb.org. Please click on the Economic Development Department and then on Community Development Block Grant.

Economic Development Hosts Two Interns From French Canada - The Economic Development Department, in collaboration with Golden West College and its program of Three Dimensional Environmental Education, is hosting students from French Canada for a period of six weeks. Carl Deveau and Sebastien Dubois are business students in the program at the College de Sherbrooke, Canada. The Three Dimensional Environmental Education program is a program funded by the US Department of Education in which three countries participate; the United States, Canada, and Mexico (the three NAFTA countries). Its core emphasis is environmental and business education and interchange.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Oil Spill – At around 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 11, approximately 6,700 gallons of crude oil spilled from a cut shipping line at 19140 Gothard Street. The spill covered approximately 180 linear feet of the property and spilled over to approximately 20 linear feet of the adjacent property to the south. The Chevron Company responded to the scene with a private clean-up crew. Once Chevron determined that the spill was not their responsibility, they offered their private clean-up services to the property owner to remove the pooling crude oil from the surface of the property. The Fire Department responded with the Hazardous Materials Team, a Battalion Chief, and a Fire Prevention Specialist, along with other support staff to document the spill, monitor the air with gas meters to confirm a safe environment, and to confirm the crude oil never made it into the sewer, storm drain or waterway. The city's Public Works Department was also placed on notice. The State Department of Conservation, Division of Oil and Gas, and the State Department of Fish and Game were on scene as well. The Fire Department continues to monitor the site until the soil meets the city's specification for soil clean up. By 7:00 p.m. that same evening, the privately contracted clean-up crew had removed just under 5,000 gallons of crude oil from the property.

Firefighters Volunteer for Charity Fundraiser - On Sunday, June 6, Golden West College hosted the “Relay for Life” event, which raises funds for the fight against cancer. Eleven Huntington Beach Firefighters volunteered and cooked breakfast for several hundred relay walkers and runners who had been there since Friday.

Car Crashes Into Storefront - On Friday, June 18, fire units responded to 7384 Center Avenue on a reported car, which had crashed through the front window of Paradise Specialties, an adult entertainment store. The 77-year-old driver said she had mistaken the gas pedal for the brake while she was attempting to park her car. Luckily, only one person in the store suffered injuries. An employee of the shop was standing behind the counter when she was struck by flying objects and display racks. She narrowly escaped being pinned by the wayward vehicle and suffered minor scratches to her leg and was experiencing minor hip pain. Both individuals were evaluated and treated at the scene. Damage to the building was estimated to be $10,000 - $15,000.

PUBLIC WORKS

Curb and Sidewalk Work - Sidewalk, curb, and gutter have been replaced on Thunderbird Circle, with crews beginning similar construction on Sparrow Drive, Sunlight Drive, Rambler Drive, Emerald Lane, and Fir Drive. The replacement necessitated the removal of parkway trees along the streets. Over the years, the tree roots had caused numerous areas of buckled and cracked sidewalk and curb, resulting in areas of standing water and tripping hazards. The new curb and sidewalk were brought back to the original grade, alleviating these problem areas. The project is funded in part by Community Development Block Grant funds.
