POLICE DEPARTMENT

HB1 Assisting with West Nile Virus - Last winter's rainfall has left many areas in the city holding far more water than a year ago. Orange County Vector Control has reported that they expect a large number of WNV vector this year due to the large amounts of standing water in areas of the county. HB1, while on patrol over the city, will be looking for areas in backyards and other places that contain large amounts of water that could provide a breeding ground for the mosquitoes. If they observe any areas of concern, they will notify OC Vector Control so that these locations may be checked. HB1 assisted with this search of possible areas last year and was successful in making notifications for yards and open areas that needed to be checked.

PUBLIC WORKS

Refuse Rate Effective Next Month - Beginning July 1, the residential refuse rate will increase by $0.53 to a monthly cost of $18.18. The charge is calculated on a daily basis, which amounts to $0.5977 per day. The refuse rate is reviewed annually as stipulated by the city's contract with Rainbow Disposal, Inc. A change in compensation for each contract year (July 1 to June 30) is determined by a formula with three variables. The variables and their weighting factors are: the Los Angeles-Riverside-Orange County Consumer Price Index (CPI) for March (76%), the County of Orange Landfill Tipping Fee (16%), and the local average price of diesel fuel in March (8%). Although landfill fees remained constant, the rate increase was driven by both the CPI and the cost of fuel. The calculated rate increase would have been $0.78 per residential unit, but Rainbow absorbed $0.25 into their costs. Commercial disposal rates, which are billed directly through Rainbow, will also increase as of July 1.
