Jazz at the Center - The Huntington Beach Art Center presents Jazz at the Center, featuring vocalist Janis Mann performing an afternoon of world-class jazz on Sunday, June 25, from 4:00-6:30 p.m. A master of the concert stage, Janis enthralls audiences with her lush vocal interpretations, clear and skillful phrasing, and a personality that embraces each individual as if she were singing for them alone. A stellar trio accompanies Mann on this performance: pianist Stuart Elster, a noted conductor and jazz artist who has worked with Carmen McRae; Willie Bobo and many other jazz luminaries; bassist Paul Gormley, whose credits include stints with Woody Herman, Joe Williams, and Anita O'Day; and legendary drummer Roy McCurdy, professor of jazz studies at USC and a veteran of Cannonball Adderley's Quintet and the ArtFarmerBennyGolson Jazztet. Presented in an intimate cabaret style setting, this is sure to be a standout performance you won't want to miss. The Art Center's music program, Live at the Center, is sponsored by the Boeing Company, The Huntington Beach Art Center Foundation, and the city of Huntington Beach. For more information and reservations, please call the Art Center at 374-1650.

Emergency Plan for At-Risk Seniors - At the June Senior Services Directors' meeting held at the Office on Aging, Randy Pesqueira, Senior Services Supervisor, and Michelle Yerke, Social Worker, presented the HB Senior Services Emergency Plan for At-Risk Seniors. In 2000, at the forefront of emergency preparedness, Huntington Beach developed a plan through the combined effort of the Fire Department's Emergency Services and Community Services Senior Services to check on pre-identified, at-risk seniors and to assist them in case of a disaster. The Emergency Plan for At-Risk Seniors is an inspiration and framework for directors at senior centers in other cities to consider. There was substantial interest and discussion.

The committee members are comprised of Downtown Business Improvement Board of Directors, City Council Downtown Economic Development Committee (EDC), and key city staff from various departments. The first meeting will be held in conjunction with the Downtown EDC on Thursday, June 22, at 8:30 a.m., in City Hall Room B-8. It is anticipated that the Main Street Closure Study Committee will meet on a weekly basis. The agenda will provide the opportunity for members to identify their issues.
