Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American Artists - The Huntington Beach Art Center is proud to present Out of Context, an exhibition of contemporary art created by 13 Vietnamese and Vietnamese-American artists. The exhibition moves beyond notions of cultural identity and war, and it explores the idea that art rises above politics. The exhibition features works in a variety of media including paintings, video, and sculpture. Amongst the sculptures you will find a fully operational toy roller coaster. The exhibition will open with a reception for the artists on Friday, June 10, and will continue through August 7. The public is invited to attend the reception from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m. A lecture will be presented in conjunction with the exhibition on Saturday, June 11, and a series of cultural events will be presented in July. The exhibition was funded in part by a generous grant from the James Irvine Foundation. For information, please call 374-1650.
ECONOMINC DEVELOPMENT
Business Development - Business development staff spent three days marketing the city of Huntington Beach and its available retail projects at the annual International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) convention. The ICSC presents a rare opportunity for Economic Development staff to meet with the nation's best retailers and describe business opportunities in Huntington Beach. Jim Lamb and Tom Welch manned a booth in the Public Sector Showcase area held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The event was very successful with over 40,000 retailers and developers attending from across the nation. Several Huntington Beach shopping center owners stopped by the booth and were extremely pleased to see the city marketing its retail sector and were happy to provide updates to staff on their retail centers. This convention is a great resource for the business development division to meet new owners of local properties and new retailers entering the marketplace. Thanks to the hard work of our city departments, the retail industry was very impressed with the quality and designs of the projects being developed in Huntington Beach. Business Development staff met with many retail brokers looking to locate or expand business in the city.
PLANNING
Seawater Desalination Facility Draft Recirculated EIR Update - The public comment period for the Draft Recirculated EIR for the proposed Seawater Desalination Project at Huntington Beach ended Friday, May 27. The Planning Department received 52 comment letters, which have been forwarded to RBF Consulting for a response. Upon completion, the Final REIR and Response-to-Comments will then be scheduled for a City Council public hearing the latter part of 2005.
Code Enforcement Violations Lead to Jail Time - Code Enforcement first received a complaint on a resident's property in April of 2003. Code Enforcement officers discovered numerous violations including no roofing materials on the garage or house (plywood sheeting only on the house), all drywall removed from the interior of the house, and no hot water. The City Attorney's office was asked for assistance after administrative remedies were exhausted. After a court order for the property to come into compliance was issued, the resident was placed on probation. Code Enforcement staff continued to work with the resident to achieve compliance by directing him to various resources to assist in completing the necessary work. Through these efforts, the resident was able to secure a Rehabilitation Loan through the city's Economic Development Department to assist in completing the repairs. Unfortunately, the resident did not make significant progress toward correcting the violations and was ordered by a Superior Court Judge to serve time in jail.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
HB1 May Statistics - The return of nice weather conditions resulted in an increase in activity by the helicopter crews. The helicopter assisted with a pursuit of a Porsche they observed in excess of 120 mph on Pacific Coast Highway. The driver was finally stopped in Newport Beach and was arrested for DUI. The helicopter also assisted in the arrest of a hit and run driver who had run from the scene of the accident, and the air crew directed ground units to the area where he was hiding. HB1 responded to 549 calls last month and were first on scene 99% of the time. They made or assisted in 20 Felony arrests and 30 misdemeanor arrests. They also issued 42 traffic citations.
PUBLIC WORKS
Water Consumption Report May 2005 - Conservation Tip of the Month: A leaking toilet is one of the most common indoor water wasters and can often go unnoticed. A few drops of food coloring in the toilet tank can alert you to a leak. If the dye appears in the bowl, there is a leak that needs to be addressed.
