Volunteer Appreciation Luau - On Thursday, July 20, Senior Services hosted a luau at the Newland Barn for those volunteers who gave 40 or more hours of service to Huntington Beach seniors in 2005. Three hundred volunteers were honored and greeted with a fresh lei made from plumerias flown in from Molokai and hand sewn by the Aloha Seniors. National Charity League volunteers served a lunch of pineapple chicken, rice, and stir-fried vegetables prepared by the chefs from Silverado Senior Living and Renaissance Huntington Terrace. Avalon Newport Beach provided a delicious pineapple upside-down cake for dessert. A trio of ukulele players, led by Jerry Long and the Aloha Senior hula dancers, entertained island style. In 2005, Senior Services volunteers gave 39,381 hours of service to Huntington Beach seniors. Mayor Dave Sullivan and Robert Dettloff, President of the Huntington Beach Council on Aging, extended their appreciation to the Senior Services volunteers. Mayor Pro Tem Gil Coerper, Council Member Cathy Green, Deputy City Administrator Bob Hall, the Council on Aging Board, and Senior Services staff were also in attendance.

Friday Night Blues - The Huntington Beach Art Center presents The Friday Night Blues on July 28 from 7:30 - 10:00 p.m., featuring the piping hot Elnora & Sumpthin' Cookin.' Serving up a tasty dish of blues, Elnora is the main dish, with a style seasoned with a bit of Jazz, a touch of Swing, a little R&B, and some old fashioned Rock 'n' Roll. Based in Huntington Beach, Elnora and the band are one of the premier Blues groups in Southern California. Join us for a high-energy performance as Elnora & Sumpthin' Cookin' heats up the stage in an intimate cabaret style. General Admission is $20; HBAC Members $15. Seating is limited, and reservations are suggested. Please call 374-1650 for information. The Art Center's music program is made possible in part by a generous grant from the Boeing Company.

New Habitat for Humanity Home Completed and Presented to New Owners - On Saturday, July 22, members of the Alvarado family were presented with the keys to their new Habitat for Humanity home located at the NE corner of Yorktown and Delaware, a home that they and many other volunteers and professionals personally helped to build. As part of the home dedication ceremony, Mayor Pro Tem Gil Coerper passed the pink-ribboned, silver hammer to the Mayor of Fullerton. This symbolized the continuance of Habitat for Humanity and Women's Build Program's efforts from Huntington Beach to Fullerton where Habitat and Women's Build will start another new home. Council Member Jill Hardy was also present to speak and accept an award on behalf of the Redevelopment Agency of the city of Huntington Beach, which donated the land on which the Alvarado's home was built and assisted with the payment of building and permit fees. The Alvarados expressed their deep thanks and appreciation for their new home and the support shown to their family. The program was followed by a quick tour of their new fully decorated and furnished home. This was the seventh home to be built by Habitat for Humanity in the city of Huntington Beach.

PUBLIC WORKS

Warner Gravity Sewer Line - The construction contract for installation of a large gravity flow sewer main was awarded at the July 17 City Council meeting. This project will construct 4,100 feet of new sewer main along Warner Avenue, from Pacific Coast Highway to Los Patos Avenue. The line will be built in conjunction with the ongoing replacement of Sewer Lift Station "D," allowing for the abandonment of existing Lift Stations "B" and "C." The construction of the new gravity sewer is intended to save both capital and operating costs by reducing the number of sewage lift stations to be maintained. The total cost of the project is approximately $7.5 million. Funding is provided by the Sewer Service Charge and a reimbursement agreement with the Sunset Beach Sanitary District. A specialized technique of micro-tunneling will be used during construction. Project completion will be late in 2007.
