The report reflects national housing trends and relies upon information from the American Housing Survey (AHS), a national survey of the housing market funded by HUD and conducted by the U. S. Census Bureau. AHS data shows rental vacancy rates in Orange County remained at about 4.5 percent for the quarter.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Garage Fire - On January 18 at 8:38 a.m., the Fire Department responded to a garage fire in a single family home located at 10111 Birchwood Drive. The first fire engine on scene found a two-story home with its garage completely involved in fire with heavy black smoke throughout the inside of the home. A total of 25 firefighters quickly brought the fire under control and prevented the fire from spreading to the rest of the home. Two civilians were treated for smoke inhalation. The estimated value of the saved home is $800,000. The fire originated in the garage, and the cause is under investigation.
Garage and Car Fire - On Sunday, January 15, at 6:30 p.m., the Fire Department responded to a reported garage fire at 15402 Cambay Lane. Upon arrival, the first engine company from Heil Fire Station found the garage and two vehicles in the driveway to be fully involved in fire. A third vehicle in the driveway was also beginning to burn. Firefighters quickly attacked the fire and simultaneously searched the residence, confirming that all of the residents were out of the home and that none were injured. Due to the intensity of the fire and the dense storage in the garage, firefighters utilized specialized foam and multiple hose lines to extinguish the fire. The garage was heavily damaged, and fire had started to spread to the attic of the home. The quick actions of the firefighters prevented the fire from rapidly spreading throughout the residence. A total of 24 firefighters responded to this incident. Damage to the house, contents, and vehicles was estimated at $150,000. The total value saved was approximately $500,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Approximately 535 students arriving at College View School were evacuated to other schools. There were no reported injuries to any students or faculty. The Orange County bomb squad, Police Department, and the Fire Department's hazardous materials team evaluated the devices. Police cleared the scene, and the campus was released back to school officials. There are no suspects at this time, although the incident remains under investigation by the Police Department.

PUBLIC WORKS
Update on Dredge Line - The Public Works staff continues to monitor the removal of the dredge line that has been entangled in the pier pilings for over a month. The extraordinarily high surf last month dislodged hose from dredging equipment being used at the Bolsa Chica Restoration Project. Approximately 2,000 feet of line was lost from the site, and to date about 1,200 feet has been recovered. Recently, a diver verified that 300 feet of line is currently wedged against the pier. The recovery of this length of 15-inch diameter line is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, contingent upon equipment rental availability. After removal of the line, the pier pilings will be inspected for damage. The contractor, Ross Island, estimates that 500 feet of detached hose has not been located.
