COMMUNITY SERVICES

Marine Safety - Warm weather and bright sunshine brought large crowds to the beach and pier this weekend. On January 18, Marine Safety Officer Mike Bartlett jumped from the Huntington Beach Pier to rescue a novice surfer who had gotten his surfboard leash caught on a pier piling. The Marine Safety Operation also hosted the ever-popular National Scholastic Surfing Association surf contest at the pier. The event was well attended, and contestants enjoyed excellent surfing conditions on the south side of the pier. Marine Safety weekend statistics were as follows: Attendance - 54,504; Public Contacts - 1,130; Rescues - 2; Preventative Actions - 231; Law Enforcement Incidents - 278; Medical Aids - 3.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Conference & Visitors Bureau Stats - The Board of the Huntington Beach Conference & Visitors Bureau recently reviewed some key indicator statistics comparing 2003 to 2002. Visitor Guide requests were up 208% with 14,223 requested in 2003. Overall, Visitor Guides distributed were up 52% to 117,165. In addition, more than 30,647 Visitors Guides were down loaded directly from the Bureau's web site. Website hits were up 135.4% to 87,054. In addition, the Bureau has started to track hotel leads provided to hotels, and this totaled 1,146 in 2003. A goodly portion of these increases was directly attributed to the increased advertising and marketing being done with funds from the Hotel & Motel Business Improvement District.

CRA 2004 Award of Excellence - The Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach Resort & Spa has been selected to receive the California Redevelopment Association's 2004 Award of Excellence in the Special Citation Category. The award will be presented on March 10 at the CRA Annual Conference to be held in Monterey. Congratulations to the city of Huntington Beach and the staff from all departments who worked so hard to bring this now award-winning project to fruition.

The Strand Update - Marriott Corporation has approved the franchise application for the proposed Residence Inn by Marriott to be built as part of the Strand. CIM will be entering into a joint venture with Huntington Hotel Group to develop, own, and operate the hotel on the site.

PUBLIC WORKS

Bartlett Park Clean-Up - On Saturday, January 10, 67 volunteers from the Huntington Beach Church of the Latter Day Saints, various school clubs from Anaheim, Westminster and La Quinta High Schools, Cal State Long Beach college, and local neighborhoods met at Bartlett Park. They labored for four hours to clear debris, litter, and illegal structures from the park. Approximately six tons of waste were gathered and hauled by hand to the perimeter of the park and then removed from the site via refuse bins and dump trucks. A grant from the California Department of Conservation-Recycling Division was used to purchase gloves and trash bags, and to rent bins for the day. The grant also supplied lunch and beverages for the volunteers. The Parks, Trees, and Landscape Section of Public Works provided oversight of the projects.
