FIRE DEPARTMENT
Albertson's Fire - On January 1, at approximately 9:07 p.m., the Fire Department was dispatched to a reported structure fire at the Albertson's store at 19640 Beach Boulevard, in the Newland Center complex. On arrival, personnel were directed to the rear of the store where light smoke was coming from a rear loading dock door. The store was full of smoke, and the fire alarm system had been activated. As Firefighters assessed the situation, it was confirmed that there was a fire in the stock room. It was also confirmed that the sprinkler system had activated and was controlling and extinguishing the fire. The burning product was removed from the store, the sprinkler system was shut down, and two sprinkler heads that had activated were replaced. A large quantity of water from the sprinkler system had spread throughout the stock room and the store and was removed by Fire personnel. Investigation into the cause of the fire revealed no ignition sources in the area where the fire originated. Fire and Police investigators were requested to respond to the scene. The store is equipped with video surveillance cameras. Viewing of the tape revealed an employee entering and leaving the stock room prior to the fire. The employee, a juvenile, was questioned about his activities prior to the fire and subsequently confessed to starting the fire. He was taken into custody and booked on arson charges. The fire caused minor smoke and heat damage to the wood mezzanine above the area of origin, along with products that were damaged by the fire and water. Fortunately, the fire sprinkler system extinguished the fire in the very early stages preventing it from spreading and causing more damage or possible injury to customers or employees. There were no injuries.
Paramedics Save Choking Man - Over the holidays, Fire personnel responded to a medical call that required Firefighters to climb a locked patio gate. Once inside, they found an elderly male sitting in a chair not breathing. The wife stated that her husband was eating a steak dinner and began to choke. She dialed 911 and attempted the Heimlich maneuver with no success. His airway was completely obstructed requiring the removal of a large piece of steak from his airway by the paramedics. He began to cough after the obstruction was removed, but he remained unconscious due to the lack of oxygen. The patient was transported to the hospital with assistance from Fountain Valley Fire Department personnel. Two hours later, when the fire engine took another patient to the hospital, the family of the patient met them there. The gentleman was standing up talking and being discharged from the hospital. His son is a Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedic. He was there with his mother and father, all sharing their appreciation. They stated that if it wasn't for the quick response and having trained paramedics on scene, there may have been a different outcome. This will be their "best Christmas ever" was the comment made by the patient.
PUBLIC WORKS
Water System Flushing - The Public Works Utilities Division has begun the biennial water system flushing program. This process takes about four months as crews move through the city. It is typically performed between Tuesday and Friday of each week. System flushing helps maintain water quality and is performed every two years per industry standard. Water crews will open hydrants and allow a controlled amount of water to flow. This helps remove harmless sediment that builds up in water lines over the course of time. During the process, customers may notice some water discoloration. This is temporary and harmless and can be remedied by simply running a bathtub faucet until the water runs clear. If discoloration persists, or if customers have any questions, they should call the Utilities Division at 536-5921.
