Shipley Nature Center - Restoration Day at the Shipley Nature Center takes place on the first Saturday of every month from 9 a.m. to noon. On March 4, everyone is invited to participate in planting, weeding, and other restoration activities. Volunteers should bring their gardening gloves and tools, and wear closed-toe shoes. You may find that you want to be a regular volunteer gardener at the center. For more information, please send an email to shipleynature@yahoo.com.

Marine Safety - The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Operation will be holding tryouts for new ocean lifeguards on Sunday, March 19, at 8 a.m. The tryouts will be held at Lifeguard Headquarters, 103 Pacific Coast Highway, one block south of the Huntington Beach Municipal Pier. The starting pay is $15.13 per hour. All applicants must be 17 years of age by June 1, 2006. The tryouts consist of three physical events: a 1,000-yard ocean swim, a 500-yard ocean swim, and a 1,500-yard run-swim-run. All events are conducted in prevailing conditions around and through the Huntington Beach Pier. Applicants must satisfactorily complete all tryout events to be eligible for further consideration. Upon successful completion of the tryouts, up to 36 qualifiers will be allowed to register for the lifeguard candidate training program held on April 8 - 15, and April 22 - 23. Applications are available at Lifeguard Headquarters or online at www.surfcity-hb.org/jobs. Please call 374-1752 for further information.

Central Park Sports Complex Batting Cages - The Central Park Sports Complex batting cages are open for business. Tokens for the cages are $1 each for 18 pitches, or six tokens for $5. Cages can be reserved in 30-minute increments at the cost of $14. For more information, please contact the batting cage office at 375-3960.

PUBLIC WORKS

OCSD Bushard Trunk Line Community Meeting - Construction of the Orange County Sanitation District's Bushard trunk line will begin again in March. As part of this project, OCSD will also begin construction work at the intersection of Bushard Street and Ellis Avenue. The nature of this work will require closure of the intersection for nine months. The closure will reduce the length of the construction project, which will in turn enhance pedestrian safety and reduce traffic congestion due to continuous traffic control changes. OCSD will be hosting a series of community meetings to provide information and answer questions regarding the project. The public is invited to attend a meeting on Wednesday, March 8, 6:30 p.m., Isaac L. Sowers Middle School, located at 9300 Indianapolis Avenue. OCSD will continue to hold neighborhood meetings and provide construction notifications as the project progresses. In addition, there will be weekly updates posted on their Web site at www.ocsd.com, under Information Center, under Construction. You can also contact Daisy Covarrubias or Jennifer Cabral through their Construction Hotline at 378-2965.

Construction Continues at Lift Station D - Construction of the new sewer lift station at Los Patos and Warner is continuing on schedule. The retaining plates have been set, and excavation will begin by the end of the week. The excavation requires the removal of soil to a depth of approximately 50' in a 300 square foot area. This phase of the project, which also includes continual dewatering, is expected to take about four months. Barring any unforeseen problems or weather delays, the project should be complete by the late fall. Updates for this project are available at the city's website under Announcements.
