COMMUNITY SERVICES
Huntington Beach Art Center - The Art Center was thrilled to present the renowned vocalist Ernie Andrews as Jazz at the Center began the 2005 season with a performance on January 30 to a sold-out audience. A living legend, Ernie performed with a hard-swinging, uniquely bluesy style, a quick-witted sense of humor, and a gift for drama that engages audiences and musicians alike. The music series, Live at the Center, is presented in an intimate cabaret style setting, offering outstanding jazz, blues, and classical performances throughout the year. Live at the Center is made possible through the generous support of The Boeing Company.
Project Self-Sufficiency - The Ruby Palace Restaurant is celebrating 25 years of business in Huntington Beach and will honor the Chinese New Year-The Year of the Rooster-with a special NOODLE MAKING DEMONSTRATION on February 4 and 5. At 5:00 p.m. both days, there will be a 10-course meal presented, followed by "Live Oriental Noodle Making" from 6:00-8:30 p.m. During the entire month of February, all the proceeds from "eggroll sales" will be donated to support the single parents of Project Self-Sufficiency. Please come to RUBY PALACE during the month of February and support PS-S! BUY THOSE EGGROLLS!
Information and Referral - Twelve dedicated volunteers answer the incoming phone calls for Seniors' Outreach and provide clerical assistance Monday - Friday from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. In 2004, these volunteers answered over 7,500 calls for information and referral for Huntington Beach seniors and their adult children. Every Monday morning, Helen Cleveland calls senior transportation clients to ask if they want to go grocery shopping the next day. These seniors anticipate Helen's call as much as the grocery shopping trip. Helen visits with them over the phone. She learns of a birthday, the antics of a favorite pet, or a grandson serving in Iraq. When Helen calls, one senior sings "Oh here's Helen with the beautiful voice." Neither rain, nor sleet, nor snow, nor hail, nor broken legs keep our volunteers from service. When Jean Payne's broken leg was in a cast, she continued her service by riding the Senior Onshore Shuttle. The seniors on the bus gave her the front seat, looked after her, and kept track of her progress. Senior Services depends on Evelyn Underwood for the latest fashion trends. At 88, Evelyn shops at Nordstrom's and volunteers at the front desk in haute couture. Beaded cell phone purses, cloisonné canes, Evelyn has it all! When she took a leave of absence from the front desk due to medical reasons, Senior Services was bereft. Thank goodness Evelyn returned before the staff made the Blackwell's worst dressed list. Evelyn does more than give Senior Services style; she genuinely cares for our senior population as well. During her recovery time at home, she continued to volunteer as a telefriend. Many of the front desk volunteers: Helen Cleveland, Ann Milazzo, Frieda Poulos, and Rita Ziccardi, have been serving Huntington Beach Senior Services longer than the current staff, and the newer front desk volunteers: Marge Lappnow, Monica Scott, Barbara Kasner, Evelyn Underwood, Rita Varin, and Jean Payne, are finding it just as rewarding. Volunteers are essential to the success of Senior Services. The programs and services that are offered are made possible with the support of these volunteers.
Winter Adult Softball - The Adult Winter Softball Leagues have started, and many of the 248 softball teams have been enjoying the new Huntington Central Park Sports Complex as well as the other traditional fields within the city of Huntington Beach. Games are played Monday through Friday nights and all day on Sunday. Teams playing in Huntington Beach this winter include: 141 Men's, 85 Coed, 17 Senior, and 5 Women's teams. Overall registration numbers continue to stay strong each season as teams come to Huntington Beach to play in great weather and on great fields. League play will continue into April.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
"Huntington Beach Neighborhoods Working Together" Brochure - A new brochure describing how neighborhood groups can obtain a no-fee permit for working in the public right-of-way for qualified projects will be available at City Hall, the libraries, and community centers. Several steps on how to proceed with a project are outlined in a new brochure called "Huntington Beach Neighborhoods Working Together." The brochure describes that, after defining the project, the neighborhood representative would first contact the city's Neighborhood Improvement staff in Economic Development at 536-5542. Before beginning, the participating neighbors would need to be committed to the project by making their financial commitments. Depending on the scope of work, a licensed insured contractor or engineer/architect would need to meet the city's requirements. After that approval is made, the neighborhood group would sign a contract with the approved contractor. Before construction, the contractor would secure the no-fee permit for right-of-way encroachment and other approvals. During construction, the city's Public Works Department will provide free inspections.
PLANNING DEPARTMENT
Timeshares Downtown - On February 8, at their 7:00 p.m. meeting, the Planning Commission will be reviewing a request by the Robert Mayer Corporation to amend the Downtown Specific Plan to allow for "timeshares" in Districts 7 & 9. These two districts consist of the Waterfront Hilton and Hyatt Resort properties as well as the approved Pacific City Project along Pacific Coast Highway. The Planning Commission's recommendation will then be forwarded to the City Council for consideration. If adopted, the request will be sent to the California Coastal Commission for their approval since theses districts are within the Coastal Zone. Although there is no development proposed as part of this request at this time, the amendment will expand areas in the city where "timeshares" can be permitted.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
New Officers - Francisco Jimenez and Michael Walters will be graduating from the Orange County Sheriff's Academy and will begin their field training program within the Patrol Bureau. They will be sworn in during a ceremony in the Chief's Office with their family members and department members in attendance. Congratulations to Officer Francisco and Officer Michael.
Recruits Start Academy - The next academy class starting at the Orange County Sheriff's Academy will have four recruits from our department. Two of the recruits have already been working in our department. Michael Dexter has spent the last two years as a Cadet, and John Borders has been a Detention Officer. The other two, Read Parker and Roman Altenbach, were hired through the recruitment process and are new to law enforcement.
PUBLIC WORKS
Arterial Rehabilitation Project Completion - Construction work is complete on four of the five arterial rehabilitations. The final segment in this contract, Edwards Street from Warner Avenue to Bolsa Avenue, will be under construction between January 31 and February 11. Traffic controls will require the closing of at least one lane during the rehabilitation process. Alternate routes, especially during the morning and evening commutes, are encouraged. Finishing work on all five segments, such as final pavement marking and manhole cover adjustments, will be completed over the next 30 days. This $2.3 million project was funded through the city's annual Gas Tax allocation.
