COMMUNITY SERVICES
Holiday Meals - On Christmas morning, after the presents were unwrapped and before they sat down to the Christmas goose, eleven Council on Aging Senior Team (C.O.A.S.T.) volunteers and their families delivered a festive holiday meal to frail, elderly Huntington Beach residents who were alone on the holiday. Norm's Restaurant prepared the meals and provided them at cost. The Handy Crafters and the Huntington Beach Council on Aging fund the Holiday Meals Program. The National Charity League created handcrafted gifts for each of the seniors. The recipients look forward to the short visit from the volunteers and their families as much as the delicious meal of roast turkey, green beans, mashed potatoes, gravy, and pie. Holiday meals will again be delivered on Sunday, February 13, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. to celebrate Valentine's Day. This is a great opportunity for the whole family to serve the community. To volunteer, call Diane Swarts, 374-1544.
Art Camp for Grown-Ups - Two workshops are available for Art Camp for Grown-Ups, which is a two-class workshop on Saturdays - January 22 and 29 or March 12 and 19. Classes start at 10:30 a.m. and end at noon. The cost is $50 with a $7 materials fee. Register at the Huntington Beach Art Center or call 374-1650 for more information.
Project Self-Sufficiency - PS-S has received its largest private donation this holiday season. A $20,000 check comes from a local woman, Sue Saffarrons, who has been a resident of Huntington Beach for 18 years. Sue was a single mom for 13 years and recently joined the Project Self-Sufficiency Foundation. She made a personal commitment to donate a sizeable amount from her business last year and hoped for a very successful 2004. She worked hard all year, saving a little from each real estate transaction, and by the end of December, it had amounted to $20,000. The city applauds Sue's generosity toward our single parents. The PS-S Foundation will put the donation to good use during the coming year. Her hope is to encourage others to do the same……pay it forward!
Marine Safety - Huntington Beach residents and visitors enjoyed beautiful weather this holiday season. Lifeguards have been busy performing medical aids and transporting Santa Claus down Main Street. On December 3rd, a caretaker's blouse got caught on the controls of a motorized wheel chair. As a result, the wheel chair ran over her right ankle. Marine Safety Officer Claude Panis treated the ankle fracture. On December 14, Marine Safety Officer Mike Bartlett treated a surfer for a fractured right forearm. On Christmas Day, Marine Safety Officer Matt Norton treated a surfer who had the top 1/3 of his right ring finger amputated during a collision in the ocean. Marine Safety statistics for December 13-26 were as follows: Attendance - 142,919; Public Contacts - 2,660; Preventative Actions - 184; Law Enforcement Contacts - 585; Medical Aids - 14; Drownings - 0.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Kitchen Fire - On the morning of December 22, twenty-one firefighters from Huntington Beach and Fountain Valley responded to a kitchen fire that occurred on Pearce St. The fire was contained to the kitchen area but smoke damage occurred throughout the home. Prior to the Fire Department's arrival, two Public Works employees, who were working in the area, risked their personal safety by attempting to extinguish the fire with a garden hose. The Good Samaritans were Tony Gomez and Paul Boucier. The cause of the fire is being investigated. There was an estimated loss of $100,000 to the home; however, firefighters were able to prevent the loss of an additional $400,000 in damage.
PLANNING
Pacific Sales - The McDonnell Centre Business Park, located just south of the northwest city limits, has a new tenant coming in Fall 2005. Pacific Sales, the largest independent major appliance retailer in Southern California, will be occupying one of two suites in a 61,431 square-foot industrial building to be constructed at 14471 Astronautics Lane. The project, approved by the Planning Department on December 22, is the latest among the most recent phase of development of surplus Boeing land that includes Cleveland Golf and Morgan Sheet Metal. Administrative approval was made possible by permit streamlining provisions in the McDonnell Centre Business Park Specific Plan. Originally adopted in 1997, the McDonnell Centre Specific Plan provides for master-planned development of a 307-acre business and industrial park. The industrial center, which now serves as home to many of Huntington Beach's largest employers, is exemplary among Orange County industrial parks for its high quality design and planning and continues to attract preferred tenants and developers.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
FBI Academy Graduation - Lieutenant JB Hume graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He has returned to work after completing 13-weeks of comprehensive academy courses. Congratulations Lt. Hume.
PUBLIC WORKS
New Traffic Signal Installations - The intersections of Nichols Street at Slater Avenue and Graham Street at Heil Avenue are identified as high priority on the city's Traffic Signal Priority List. Nichols at Slater is a "T" intersection controlled by a southbound stop sign. A traffic signal will be constructed to control vehicle and pedestrian traffic at the intersection. The Graham at Heil signal will replace an existing four-way-stop traffic control. Plans and specifications are complete for the projects and the Public Works Commission has recommended the projects be advertised for bidding. An environmental determination by the Planning Department is anticipated in January. Bids on the project will be requested in February and construction should commence in the spring.
