COMMUNITY SERVICES

Project Self-Sufficiency - Project Self-Sufficiency received a wonderful surprise from Jan Mulholland and her fourth grade class at Eader Elementary School right before Christmas. Her fourth grade class had read about PS-S in the newspaper and decided to do something special for a PS-S family. The children all earned some extra money at home by doing extra chores around their homes. These funds were collected and given to their teacher, who wrote a check for $100 and sent it to PS-S, along with a Christmas card signed by every pupil in the class. Susan Edwards sends her appreciation to this very caring classroom of children in Huntington Beach. The check was given to a PS-S family for Christmas.

Bluff Top Improvements - The city has contracted with a fencing company to begin replacing the railing along the beach bluff from 9th Street to Dog Beach. Work started December 27 at 9th Street working north and will take approximately 60-90 days to complete. Once the railing is completed, the city will make repairs to the existing stairs and ramps in the area from the park down to the beach. Palms and erosion controls will be added to the landscape planter areas adjacent to the parking lots north of Goldenwest Street. This is a joint project with Public Works and Community Services Departments, which utilizes funds from two state grants.

Santa's Helpers - Nine volunteers from senior services delivered holiday meals to 76 seniors on Christmas morning. Norm's Restaurant provided, at cost, a delicious meal of steak, baked potato, vegetable, soup, salad, and dessert. The Huntington Harbor Garden Club crafted a sleigh and snowman Christmas decoration as a gift for each senior, and local Girl Scout troops hand made Christmas cards. The holiday meals program is made possible through funding from the Handy Crafters and the Huntington Beach Council on Aging.

Coaching Youth Sports - Have you thought about being a volunteer coach and having a positive impact on young athletes? Community Services has a great new class for aspiring coaches on January 24 from 6 to 9 p.m. The cost is $35 for the one-class session at Edison Community Center. Sign up now and learn how to become a more effective teacher and help build a young person's self-esteem.

PUBLIC WORKS

New Entry Sign for Civic Center - Thanks to a grant from the Recycling Division of the State of California Department of Conservation, the Public Works Department was able to purchase new monument signage for the Civic Center. The new sign is installed at the driveway entrance on Yorktown near Lake Street. The posts and sign face are fabricated entirely of plastic lumber, which is a recycled product made from plastic discards such as water and soda bottles and milk cartons. This material is as durable as it is friendly to the environment. The signs are graffiti resistant and won't crack or peel like painted wooden signs. Plans are underway to install matching signage at the other major driveway entrance off Yorktown and Main
