COMMUNITY SERVICES
Baby Talk: Sign for Tots - Have you heard that pre-verbal children want to communicate with you, and they can? Simple sign language can replace trying to guess what your tot needs. Take one of two, six-class sessions beginning January 10 and February 24 and learn how to "speak" sign language with your child. Classes are held at the City Gym, and the fee is $35.
Seats Still Available for the 2007 Rose Parade - Join the city of Huntington Beach Community Services Department for the spectacular 2007 Rose Parade. There is limited seating available at 2000 East Colorado Boulevard. All registrants under 17 years must be accompanied by an adult. Tickets are $90, which includes transportation and seating. Buses will depart from the Civic Center, 2000 Main Street, at 6:45 a.m. sharp and return at approximately 3 p.m. For further information, please call 536-5486.
Project Self-Sufficiency - The 21st Annual Christmas Party for Project Self-Sufficiency participants was held December 13 at St. Wilfrid's Church. Susan Edwards reports that the room was a whirl of activity with many toys; face painters; Christmas carolers; Girl Scouts hosting craft tables; Santa giving out stuffed animals and posing for photos; Miss Huntington Beach contestants serving food from Lucci's Deli; and firemen, Soroptimists, and PS-S Foundation members lending their time and talents. Many excited children and single moms enjoyed the generosity of the community. The Girl Scouts held a gently-used book drive, and 400 books were given out. Pat Bone donated the centerpieces for the tables as well as a beautifully flocked Christmas tree, which a local Brownie troop decorated. The room looked wonderful and was full of Christmas cheer. By the end of the evening, there was nothing left. As is a PS-S custom, EVERYTHING goes home to PS-S participants -- tree, centerpieces, decorations, food, and toys. A special thanks to the H.B. Fire Department for the toys; to various groups and individuals like Ray Frankeny; to Gisela Campagne and the H.B. Youth Board for helping set up the room and bringing dessert; to Lucci's Deli for the wonderful catered dinner; to Wal*Mart and Jon Groth for their helping hands; to Soroptimists (Cindy Ford) and the PS-S Foundation (Joyce Riddell); and to the Girl Scouts & Brownies for the face paining. The Project Self-Sufficiency Program could not do any of this without the wonderful Huntington Beach community, as many hands make light work. Happy Holidays to all!
Parking & Camping - An electronic reader board that displays the number of open parking spaces has been installed at the Main Promenade Parking Structure. The technology will assist the public on how full the structure is and serve as a customer service tool. In addition, this new device has the capability of keeping vehicle totals weekly, daily, and hourly. It will be beneficial with statistics needed for parking and attendance data that are constantly used in the downtown area. Innovation and new technology are vital in areas where tourism has grown so rapidly, like it has in downtown Huntington Beach.
Youth Board Bake Sale - The Huntington Beach Youth Board held a bake sale throughout City Hall on December 13. The bake sale was well received by all departments, and the Youth Board realized a profit of $602 for their efforts. The Youth Board baked cookies for the sale, and Youth Board Council Liaison Jill Hardy contributed with her home baked mini-muffins. This successful fundraiser will benefit the 2007 Youth in Government Day.

PUBLIC WORKS
Trash Pickup Holiday Schedule and Tree Disposal - The Rainbow Disposal trash collection service will be adjusted to accommodate the Monday holidays. During the weeks of December 25 - 30 and January 1- 6, all trash will be collected one day later than the regular schedule. Rainbow will resume the regular collection schedule on January 8. Huntington Beach residents enjoy free, curbside recycling of Christmas trees. Rainbow Disposal will collect trees with the regular trash pick-up from December 26 through January 15. The discarded Christmas trees will be ground and recycled into mulch. To recycle your tree, simply remove all ornaments, hooks, light strings, tinsel, and stand, and place it with household trash on the regular trash day. Remember, no stands! The maximum height is six feet, so trees that are taller than six feet must be cut into sections. If your tree is flocked, it cannot be used for mulch. However, Rainbow will still collect it for disposal. Huntington Beach residents who use the blue bin dumpster service should place their trees beside the trash bins for collection. For ease of handling, please do not place trees in the bin. If you would like further information, please contact the Public Works Department at 375-5010, or Rainbow Disposal at 847-3581.
