ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
Civic Center Improvements - The Citizens Participation Advisory Board (CPAB), the group that makes recommendations to the City Council on allocating Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds, recently voted to recommend that $250,000 of CDBG Unprogrammed Funds be used to make Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) improvements at the Civic Center. Improvements proposed by the Public Works Department would include upgraded access from the disabled parking stalls on the north side of the Civic Center to the Council Chambers and Police detention facility, and upgrades to restrooms and other Civic Center fixtures, all in compliance with ADA standards. The City Council will hold a public hearing and consider this request in January. If the project is approved, preliminary design will begin with an anticipated completion date in FY 2004-2005.
Cleveland Golf Coming to Huntington Beach! - It was announced last week that Cleveland Golf would be moving its corporate headquarters from Cypress to the McDonnell Centre Business Park in Huntington Beach. Cleveland Golf is famous for their "Cleveland Wedge" and is sponsor to dozens of professional golfers on both the men's and women's circuits. They will be constructing a new 140,000 square foot industrial building. This is the first major industrial buyer in the second phase of the McDonnell Centre Business Park. Many thanks go out to the Planning, Public Works, and Building Departments for their cooperation to help Cleveland Golf meet their time deadlines.
FIRE DEPARTMENT
Emergency Services Office - On November 18, the Fire Department's Emergency Services Office and Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) conducted Response to At-Risk Seniors training for employees of the Seniors' Outreach and Rodgers Seniors' Center. The employees were shown how to set up and operate a Command Post to manage the Senior Response Teams, which will check on the frail and elderly of our community after a disaster. On December 2, the CERT and the Fire Department trained 75 volunteers as Senior Response Team Members and conducted a full-scale exercise. Four scenarios were set up using seniors as victims in the Senior Center where teams practiced being dispatched by the Command Post, communicating by radio, operating as a team, and responding to the senior citizens. The Fire Department and the Community Services Department, along with the Council on Aging, COAST, CERT, and RACES volunteers, helped develop this plan in 1999 prior to Y2K. The plan will be activated any time there is damage from an emergency within the city. Special thanks go to the Community Services Department for keeping this plan a priority!
PUBLIC WORKS
Sandbags - When it is raining, or rain is imminent, free sandbags and sand are available to Huntington Beach residents at the city's Public Works Corporation Yard located at 17371 Gothard Street (between Slater and Warner Avenues). This service is available during working hours only, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Sandbags are for resident use and identification, but verifying residence in Huntington Beach is required. There is a limit of 10 bags per person. While sand is available, residents are required to bring their own shovel and to fill the bags themselves. For more information, please call the Corporation Yard at (714) 960-8861. The city does not collect bags after the rainy season - it is the responsibility of the resident to dispose of the sand and bag.
Recycle Your Christmas Tree - The city is happy to provide city residents with the opportunity to recycle their unflocked Christmas tree into mulch. Rainbow Disposal will collect trees left at the curb next to trashcans or commercial bins between December 26 and January 17. Regular trash trucks make collections on regularly scheduled collection days. The maximum length is six feet. Taller trees must be cut down so as not to exceed six feet. It is important to remove the stand, nails, and all decorations, including lights and tinsel. Trees with leftover decorations cannot be chipped for mulch and flocked trees cannot be recycled.
