Huntington Central Park Sports Complex - Since it was opened, the Central Park Sports Complex continues to be home to tournaments from the Player's Softball Tournament Series, Safe and Sober Softball, and American Association of Amateur Community Sports Organizations. In addition to these tournaments, there have been company tournaments for Pfizer Pharmaceutical, California Highway Patrol, Chili's, Southern California Gas Company, and Southern California Edison. Upcoming events for the Sports Complex include hosting the Southern California Municipal Athletic Federation's Coed Tournament Qualifier on September 11. Other organizations renting the facility for upcoming events include the Hyatt Corporation, USSSA, and in October the facility will be hosting a College Showcase Tournament featuring top fast-pitch players from around the county, state, and country.
Art Center - The Huntington Beach Art Center was in full swing Sunday afternoon as Rogelio Mitchell and Friends performed to a nearly sold-out audience for Jazz at the Center. Calling it a Musical Affair, Rogelio played duets with each of the musicians before bringing the entire group on stage for an incredible experience of Afro-Caribbean jazz. Guests were dancing in their seats to the rhythmic sound of percussion, congas, guitar, and bass as Rogelio described the roots of the music and the stories behind the words. The concert was a fine example of the musical artistry presented at the Art Center's performing arts series. For information about upcoming concerts, please call 714-374-1650.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
California Energy Commission Meeting on Aging Power Plants - Economic Development staff attended the California Energy Commission meeting on Aging Power Plants last week in Sacramento. The Commission dealt with issues such as the status of aging power plants, their value to the community and their ability to provide up to 10% of the State's energy resources. This energy is extremely valuable during the peak periods of electrical demand. With retrofitting many of these plants operate with the efficiency and cleanliness of a new plant. For Huntington Beach it means that the AES power plant will likely continue to be of service for many years into the future.
Sale of 214 Fifth Street - August 25 marked the end of the 30-day due diligence period for the purchaser of 214 Fifth Street, which is part of the Downtown Specific Plan area. No issues were identified during the due diligence period which needed to be addressed. As such, escrow on the parcel, which is being purchased by Robert Koury, must close by September 24.
PUBLIC WORKS
Pedestrian Signal in Operation - The new pedestrian signal at the intersection of Geraldine Lane and Slater Avenue will be operational on Tuesday September 7. The area is adjacent to Lakeview Elementary School. An adult crossing guard will continue to be assigned by the City to assist school-age pedestrians in crossing Slater Avenue before and immediately after school hours. The pedestrian signal will improve the safety of crossing the busy street during the evenings and weekends. The new traffic signal displays a green light for motorists on Slater Avenue, with the signal changing to red when the pedestrian push button is activated. Additional improvements include crosswalk modifications to enhance visibility and upgraded lighting of the area.
