COMMUNITY SERVICES

Vacancy on Task Force - The Human Relations Task Force would like to announce that it has two vacancies. The mission of the task force is to promote and celebrate diversity in our community through education and understanding. The task force works toward achieving its mission by sponsoring annual community events, dialogues, and educational field trips for middle school students. Applicants must be residents of Huntington Beach and be available to attend meetings on the first Tuesday evening of every month. For more information regarding these volunteer positions, please contact Elaine Kuhnke at 374-5307 or download an application from the city's website at www.surfcity-hb.org. Applications are due August 25 or until filled.

Friday Nite Funtime Dance - The Friday Nite Funtime Dance for developmentally disabled adults will be held on Friday, August 18, at Edison Community Center. The doors open at 7:00 p.m., and the dance ends at 9:30 p.m. A live DJ will provide great music. The fee is $2 at the door.

Adventure Playground Season Ends - Thursday, August 17, is the last day to enjoy Adventure Playground for the season.

New Position - Volunteer Escort - Some seniors need a little extra help at the grocery store or the doctor's office. In order to meet this need, Huntington Beach Senior Services has created a new Volunteer Escort position to assist an older person through their errands. The volunteer's commitment will be two days per month for up to three hours per day. Graduation from Volunteer training, Friendly Visitor training, or enrollment in the "Age Wave" class beginning October 4 is necessary to qualify as a Volunteer Escort. This volunteer position requires fingerprinting and background check. For more information, please contact Diane Swarts 374-1544.

Surf City Senior Providers Network - On Thursday, August 17, Huntington Beach Senior Services will host the Surf City Senior Providers Network which will be held poolside at the Renaissance Huntington Terrace, 18800 Florida Street, from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Michael J. Talin, CRPS®, CSA™, J.D., M.B.A. will present "Welcome to the Red Zone: The Most Critical Time of Your Investment Life." The Renaissance will provide a summer barbecue luncheon open to all senior service providers. The Surf City Senior Providers Network is a forum founded by Huntington Beach Senior Services to address senior issues and concerns, facilitate access to needed services, provide advocacy on behalf of older adults, and improve communication between interested professional and community organizations. Reservations are required. Please call Teri Simonis at 374-1544 or email tsimonis@surfcity-hb.org.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Continuum of Care - The city of Huntington Beach was one of two Orange County cities, along with a dozen other agencies and organizations, which volunteered to staff the Homeless Prevention Booth at the Orange County Fair. Over 135,000 fairgoers had the opportunity to see how the Continuum of Care provides housing and services to the county's homeless population and to increase awareness and recognition of the services provided. The Continuum of Care serves countywide and is coordinated by the county's Office of Homeless Prevention.

PLANNING

Parkside Residential (Graham Street) Update - On August 8, the California Coastal Commission voted to continue the city's Local Coastal Program Amendment for the Parkside Residential development to a date to be determined in October 2006. The reason for the postponement was because the city and Shea Homes require additional time to review the staff report, suggested modifications, and staff report addendum. The city also believed that because of the complexity of the issues raised by the LCP Amendment and the staff recommendation, additional time would benefit all parties.

PUBLIC WORKS

Arterial Rehabilitation on Ellis and Yorktown - The entire project includes three arterial segments for complete rehabilitation and two residential areas for asphalt overlay. The residential areas included several streets in southeast Huntington Beach. Overlays were recently completed on Cape Split Circle, Castine Drive, Kittery Circle, Leilani Drive, Luau Lane, Onset Circle, and Wood Island Lane. The downtown areas included most of 14th Street, 16th Street, Acacia Avenue, Pecan Avenue, and Palm Avenue. The segment of Warner Avenue between Algonquin Street and Sims Street is complete. Upcoming arterial work will consist of pavement rehabilitation and the removal and replacement of trees that impact sidewalks and drainage. Work is currently underway on Ellis Avenue between Gothard Street and Main Street. The majority of the work is expected to be completed by August 25. The next arterial segment is Yorktown Avenue between Beach Boulevard and Bushard Street, and the work will begin early September. Weather permitting, the work on Yorktown should be completed by the end of December. One lane in each direction will remain open to traffic; however, alternate routes are suggested during construction.
