COMMUNITY SERVICES
CDBG Funding for Seniors - So far in 2005, the funding received through CDBG (Community Development Block Grant) enabled Huntington Beach Senior Services to provide care management and transportation for 745 elderly clients, 402 of whom the federal government classifies as extremely low-income. Senior Services transported these clients on 22,440 rides to visit doctors, go shopping, eat at Rodgers' TLC nutrition program, participate in activities, and many other transportation needs within Huntington Beach. Transportation was able to provide 6,175 more rides in 2005 than in 2004. In addition, care managers made 920 home visits and provided information and referral to 5,677 Huntington Beach seniors and adult children. Through the assistance that Senior Services provides, Huntington Beach seniors maintain their self-sufficiency and independence with dignity. Without the support of CDBG funding, Senior Services would be unable to meet this goal.
Distance Derby - On August 20, the city of Huntington Beach, together with Rainbow Disposal, will hold the 51st Annual Distance Derby, the oldest race in Orange County. These early morning events are followed by the Surf Kids Fun Run at 10:00 a.m. The Distance Derby takes place along the beach with a spectacular view of the ocean. If you are up for an early morning run or walk, consider joining us at Pier Plaza for a morning of fun. All proceeds will support the Project Self-Sufficiency Program. He received many accolades from the participants for his expertise and insight. Congratulations, Tom!
POLICE DEPARTMENT
July HB1 Stats - The month of July had several significant activities for the helicopter. They assisted patrol units in apprehending a motorcyclist who was traveling in excess of 160 MPH on a number of freeways in the county. As mentioned previously in the Weekly Report, HB1 will be monitoring potential mosquito breeding areas and reporting them to Vector Control. They compiled a list of addresses of potential problem areas and provided them to Vector Control. HB1 responded to a call of an assault in progress, located the possible vehicle, then coordinated ground units to stop the car. Inside the car was a severely beaten female. The male in the car was arrested for domestic violence. The helicopter's observation of the vehicle led to intervention by the police before any more harm could come to the female. HB1 responded to 613 calls during the month and were first on scene 99% of the time. They made 30 felony arrests, 54 misdemeanor arrests, and issued 28 citations.
PUBLIC WORKS
Road Construction on Adams at Brookhurst - On August 8, construction began on a road improvement project to add right turn lanes on Adams Avenue at Brookhurst Street. The project requires lane closures in both the eastbound and westbound directions on Adams. Lane closures will be in effect for approximately six weeks. Detour information signs have been placed in the area and the signals adjusted to accommodate traffic flows. Alternate routes are suggested, especially during the morning and evening drive times. The $500,000 street widening project is funded through an Intersection Improvement Grant from OCTA and Traffic Impact Fees.
