Get Ready to Run!! - The 52nd Annual Distance Derby, co-sponsored by the city and Rainbow Disposal, is coming up on August 19. The runs begin and end at the Huntington Beach Pier with the 10-mile run beginning at 7:00 a.m., the 5-mile run/walk at 8:30 a.m., and the Surf Kids Fun Run at 10:00 a.m. A run shirt is guaranteed to pre-registered runners only. Registration will also be taken the morning of the race from 6:00 - 6:45 a.m., and run shirts are on a first-come, first-serve basis that morning. All proceeds benefit the Project Self-Sufficiency Program. Special thanks to Rainbow Disposal, Wal×Mart, and Snail's Pace Running Shop for their support.

New Staff at Senior Services - Huntington Beach Senior Services welcomes two, long-time volunteers to the staff; David Downs to the transportation program, and Mary Siegel to the meals-to-the-home program. David has been a volunteer driver since 2000. Last year, David volunteered 330 hours! Each week, he drives a grocery-shopping route, and the passengers love him. Harriet Payne, 82 years old, wrote in a thank you note to David, "I appreciate all you do for me and the other 'girls.' I often think how difficult just going out can be and what you, in your friendly way, add to the morning." To be a staff driver, David trained and tested for a Class B driver's license so that he could transport nine+ passengers on the para-transit buses. Mary Siegel has been a meals volunteer for over five years and is well known for going above and beyond. Mary is catching on quickly because of her first-hand knowledge and experience with the program and participants. She is friendly, easy going, and a natural with people. Mary will be the first point of contact when a senior needs a meal to the home and will do the in-home assessment coordinating with the Care Management Team and Feedback Foundation. Senior Services is fortunate to have two experienced volunteers join the staff.

The Huntington Beach Art Center - I Dreamt I could Play …the Bicycle, is a performance art piece involving several bicycle-related sound sculptures and a 7,200-watt, ten-channel sound system. These sound sculptures are plucked, beat, and pumped to create a wide variety of electronically amplified sounds. The complex sound system allows the artists to sculpt with these sounds around the audience. The performance includes the artist, Kurt Wold, and is presented in conjunction with the current exhibition, Kurt Wold: Perpetual Motion. Performance length is approximately 45 minutes and will include a question and answer session. The performances are scheduled for Friday, August 11, at 7:00 p.m., and Sunday, August 13, at 2:30 p.m. Admission is free. The performances are made possible by a generous grant from Arts Orange County and the Orange County Community Foundation. Please call the Art Center for details at 374-1650.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

HB 1 Stats for July - July saw a sharp increase in calls for service as the warm weather of summer settled into Surf City. Officer Wersching completed the necessary 450 hours of flight time with a Certified Flight Instructor and received his official set of "Aero Unit Wings." This will now allow him to be a Pilot in Command of the helicopter. He is continuing his studies to become a flight instructor and has passed the first several written tests. There were several calls of significance with which the Aero Unit assisted. Officers responded to a report of several girls missing in the area of Central Park. Using the PA system, they made announcements. As a result of those announcements, the girls were eventually located. They assisted Marine Safety in the search for a swimmer reported missing from the city beach. On the 4th of July, both of the department's helicopters flew throughout the day and night. During the nighttime hours, an HB Fire Inspector flew along with the officers to direct the Police/Fire Firework Suppression Units on the ground to locations where fireworks were being ignited. The unit responded to a total of 472 calls during the month making 8 felony arrests, 5 misdemeanor arrests, and issued 10 citations. They were able to cancel ground units responding to calls 93 times. The officers of the Aero Unit were first on scene to the calls to which they responded 97% of the time.

July 2006 Water Consumption - Did you know? The majority of the tap water here in Huntington Beach comes via groundwater wells from a vast, deep groundwater aquifer.
