"Casting" Call for "Huck" and "Becky" - The Huck Finn Fishing Derby for boys and girls six to fourteen years of age will be held on the Municipal Pier on Saturday, August 12, from 9:15 to 11:30 a.m. There will be many prizes awarded for most fish caught, largest fish, etc., as well as for best "Huck Finn" and "Becky Thatcher" costumes. Registration starts at 8 a.m. at the end of the pier.
Lights, Camera, Action! - Are the kids getting bored with summer? Sign them up at Murdy for a one-week class where they'll learn how to make a movie!! Movies By Kids is for seven to twelve year olds who have an interest in movies. They create an idea for a movie, storyboard the idea, and venture out to film it. All projects are professionally edited, and every student gets a DVD of their movie. The fee is $330 plus a $25 lab fee. The class runs from August 7 to 11, 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Stay Cool with Swimming - The City Gym and Pool is open to all ages for recreational swimming Monday and Wednesday from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m., and on Saturday from 2:45 to 4:45 p.m. The fee is $2, and seniors swim free on Fridays from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m.

Parkside Residential (Graham Street) Update - On Tuesday, August 8, the California Coastal Commission will be conducting a hearing in San Pedro to consider the city's Local Coastal Program Amendment for the Parkside Residential development. In 2002, the City Council approved an Environmental Impact Report, General Plan Amendment, Zoning Map Amendment, Local Coastal Program Amendment, Tentative Tract Map, Conditional Use Permit, and Coastal Development Permit for the development of approximately 50 acres on the west side of Graham Street, south of Warner Avenue, owned by Shea Homes. The city-approved development included 170 single-family residential homes, an 8.2-acre public park, private open space, and many public improvements. PUBLIC WORKS
New Improvements for Beach Boulevard Frontage - Public Works began work on two projects, CC 1229 and 1238, at the Beach Boulevard frontage road between Taylor and Sterling Avenues the week of July 17. The project, which is funded through Caltrans and the city Water Fund, will consist of landscape and hardscape improvements including a decorative wall on the frontage road median and parkway area on the east side of Beach Boulevard, utility relocations, new curbs and gutters, sidewalks, and access ramps. The contractor, 4-Con Engineering from Riverside, is expected to complete the project by the end of November.
