PUBLIC WORKS
Arbor Day Celebration – At noon on Monday, April 26, Arbor Day will be celebrated at Huntington Central Park. City staff wishes to extend an invitation to residents to come out that day to enjoy their lovely park and celebrate as a California Sycamore is planted adjacent to the Adventure Playground, just east of the Central Library. Assisting with the planting will be Huntington Beach students from Mesa Middle School. Dignitaries will include among others, Mayor Cathy Green; Ruth Sylvia Stainer, Miss Huntington Beach; and Gena Bartrom and Ralph Bauer of the Huntington Beach Tree Society. Elaine Craft, Arbor Day Chairman, will present an original poem entitled “The Sycamore” in honor of Arbor Day. The city of Huntington Beach wishes to acknowledge the contributions of the Women’s Division of the Chamber of Commerce whose efforts to plant trees the last 24 years have helped to beautify and enhance the environment and improve the quality of life for residents and visitors to our city.
POLICE DEPARTMENT
Honors Given to Sergeant for Enforcement Efforts – This week, the Police Department was pleased to hear that Sergeant Tom Arnold has been chosen as this year’s honoree at the Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) Statewide Law Enforcement and Community Recognition Dinner. This honor is MADD California’s highest commendation for law enforcement. The award dinner, which will take place on Saturday, May 15, is sponsored by MADD and the California Office of Traffic Safety. Sergeant Arnold, as a helicopter pilot, observer, and the supervisor of the Police Department’s Aero Bureau, is very active in DUI enforcement and frequently assists ground officers in identifying and arresting drivers who are under the influence. DUI enforcement “from the air” is a vital part of our goal to ensure the safety of everyone traveling on the roads of Huntington Beach.
COMMUNITY SERVICES
Easter Adopt-A-Family – Project Self-Sufficiency just finished its 15th annual Easter Adopt-a-Family Program. All PS-S families who wanted to participate were assisted. There were over 50 matches this year. Again, the Community Services Department adopted a family. In addition to cash, contributing staff put together three boxes of food, food certificates, fresh fruit and vegetables, personal items, and candy for the children’s Easter Basket.
HCP Sports Complex Grand Opening – The long-awaited opening of the Huntington Central Park Sports Complex has arrived! Plan to bring the family, especially the children, to the sports complex this Saturday, April 24, at 6:00 p.m. for food, fun, tours, games, music, and lots more. Most of the games and booths are geared toward children, but with square dancers, bounce houses, face painting, HB Concert Band, and pizza – there will be something for everyone. If you would like to volunteer to help, please call Gisela at 374-5397.

Senior Services - Social Worker, Bud Taylor, will give a presentation at the annual "Removing the Stigma - Issues in Substance Abuse & Aging" workshop on April 23 at Irvine City Hall. Bud's topic is "Community Outreach Efforts - Collaborative Challenges and Successes." This workshop provides education to health care and senior service providers concerning the special needs of older adults in the area of substance abuse. It is an interagency collaborative workshop planned by the city of Irvine, the city of Huntington Beach Senior Services, the American Society of Aging, the county of Orange Health Care Agency, and the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence.
