COMMUNITY SERVICES

Project Self-Sufficiency - This year, Project Self-Sufficiency started a BIRTHDAY TOY CLOSET for the children of PS-S participants. The toy closet was started right after the first of the year with a location and a volunteer to oversee it, but it has run out of toys due to its huge success with PS-S parents. If you would like to donate to the PS-S Birthday Toy Closet, please call Jodianne at 969-0439 or drop off toys at the PS-S office (Susan Edwards 536-5439) in Community Services. PS-S is hoping that there are community groups in Huntington Beach that might like to make a "toy donation" to the PS-S Birthday Toy Closet. Toys are needed for boys and girls ages two to seventeen.

Community Help for Seniors - As part of their annual community service blitz day, Brethren Christian Junior and Senior High School volunteers assisted two frail and homebound Senior Service clients with heavy yard work and home cleaning. The teenagers coordinated the work, made the phone calls and appointments with the clients, and brought the necessary tools. The low-income clients selected the work that needed to be done that they could not do themselves. The tasks the students performed, while not requiring great skill, improved the quality of life for these clients and, in one case, made a pathway safe for the senior to navigate. Brethren Christian has partnered with Senior Services each year for their annual event, and their community service has helped to promote self-sufficiency and independence for Huntington Beach seniors, the goal of Senior Services.

High School Arts Festival - The Huntington Beach Art Center is proud to present the Huntington Beach Union High School District Annual Arts Festival. Representing seven high schools, there are over 200 works created by local students. The exhibition is impressive and includes works in all media - from drawings, paintings, and prints - to ceramics, fiber, and sculpture. You are invited to visit the exhibition and discover the creativity and imagination of these talented youth. The exhibit will be on display through Thursday, April 21, with students from the performing arts presenting dance, film, and theater throughout the week. Call the Art Center for information at 374-1650.

Student Exhibit at Art Center - In partnership with Imagination Celebration of Orange County, the Art Center is also presenting an exhibition of work created by students of all ages from grades K-12. Featuring stunning visual images in a variety of media including photography, animation, digital art, film, and computer graphics, the exhibition will include a closing reception on Sunday, April 24, from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. In cooperation with the Orange County Performing Arts Center, Izzi Tooinsky will perform a unique blend of storytelling enhanced by the art of juggling and creative wordplay during the reception from 2:30 - 3:15 p.m. Please join us for this special celebration. Seating is limited, and admission is free.

Help Keep Your Beaches Clean - The city of Huntington Beach and Simple Green will host an Earth Day Beach Cleanup on the north side of the municipal pier on Saturday, April 23, from 9:00 a.m. to noon. This will be the twentieth year the city and Simple Green team up to promote clean ocean and beaches. For more information, call Tim Turner at 536-5614.

17th Annual Golf Tournament - The city of Huntington Beach held its 17th Annual Golf Tournament on Saturday. It was a beautiful day at Meadowlark Golf Course where 1st place went to Larry Grant with a gross of 29. The 2nd place award for gross went to Tim Mincarelli who scored 76. Awards were also given for low net using a Peoria handicapping system. The winner of low net was Michael Bauer. Prizes were also awarded for Closest to the Pin and Longest Drive.

Marine Safety - At 8:30 p.m. on April 9, Huntington Beach Lifeguards responded to a multiple victim stabbing on the city beach by the fire rings behind tower #13. Lifeguards treated both male patients at the scene prior to releasing them to paramedics for transport to UCI Medical Center. Marine Safety Statistics for March 2005 were as follows: Attendance - 510,665; Public Contacts - 10,698; Rescues - 13; Preventative Actions - 1,855; Law Enforcement Contacts - 1,615; Medical Aids - 38; Lost & Found Persons - 2; Wildlife Calls - 5; Public Education Lectures/Students - 3/90.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Ocean View Estates Hospitality Eve - On April 14, the Ocean View Estates residents were invited to meet their new Park Manager and the city's Real Estate Manager at their community clubhouse. Approximately 40 residents enjoyed refreshments at this social event. Ocean View Estates, located at the corner of Ellis and Goldenwest, is a 44-unit city-owned mobile home park that is managed by the Real Estate Division.

FIRE DEPARTMENT

Haz-Mat Release - On April 7, a fire unit responded to the Cambro Manufacturing facility located on Clay Street for a reported hazardous materials release. On arrival, firefighters found that approximately 300 to 400 gallons of Iso-Polyester-Resin had spilled in a room located within the facility. The Hazardous Materials team was called to the incident due to the size and nature of the spill. They investigated the incident and determined the spill posed no public or environmental threat.

PLANNING DEPARTMENT

Toyota of Huntington Beach Reconstruction - On April 13, the Zoning Administrator approved entitlements for construction of a new Toyota vehicle sales and service facility at the site of the existing dealership (west side of Beach Boulevard just north of Garfield Avenue). The approved facility consists of an approximately 39,500 sq. ft. sales office, showroom, service building, and a 162,650 sq. ft. multi-level parking structure (inventory, storage, and customer parking) for over 450 vehicles. Existing improvements will be demolished, and proposed improvements will be constructed in two phases in order to allow the business to remain open during construction. The project signifies a win-win development for HB: the project's site planning and architecture represent a significant design achievement, and it will be a prominent improvement to the Beach Boulevard streetscape. In addition, the expanded facility is expected to generate substantial sales tax revenues for the city.

Seawater Desalination Facility Draft Recirculated Environmental Impact Report (EIR) Extended Comment Period - The deadline for submitting comments on the Draft Recirculated EIR for the proposed Seawater Desalination Project at Huntington Beach has been extended to Friday, May 27. On April 8, the city learned that one of the 11 sections of the EIR was not accessible on the city's website. This issue was corrected by Monday, April 11. The city decided to extend the comment period due to this problem to facilitate public review of the document. A public notice reflecting the extended comment period was sent out.

POLICE DEPARTMENT

Officer Honored - This past week, Traffic Motor Officer Dale Shields was honored by the Orange County Chapter of MADD for his efforts in arresting the impaired driver during 2004. He was given the "Century Award" for arresting over 100 impaired drivers. His 130 total DUI arrests was the second highest in all of Orange County. Officer Shields has also been honored in past years for his DUI enforcement.

DUI Traffic Grant - The Police Department received a grant to fund a comprehensive DUI interdiction program. The grant period will run through December 31, 2006. During this grant period, the Police Department will staff additional officers to target the drinking driver, conduct DUI checkpoints, and give the information on arrests to the local media. Also included will be DUI saturation patrol. It will consist of a large number of officers assigned to an area to spot impaired drivers. During this saturation, patrol officers will be contacting alcohol establishments and handing out free cab vouchers to the establishments to give to patrons. Officers will enter into a cooperative agreement with the bars, restaurants, and liquor stores to conduct training of employees to identify the impaired person. CSP-Project Path will offer free training to the establishments.

PUBLIC WORKS

Tree Planting at Arevalos Park - On April 9, the Huntington Beach Tree Society and the 4-H Club of Marina High School completed a tree planting project funded by the Disneyland Community Outreach Program 2005. Through the Disneyland Resort "Show Your Character" Program, the Huntington Beach Tree Society received a check for $5,000 for the project, and the Marina High School 4-H Club received a $1,000 check and a $500 credit card for expenses. This program was created in honor of the 50th anniversary celebration of Disneyland. The project application had to be completed in connection with a high school teacher and a club that was made up of juniors and sophomores. Additionally, the project had to address specific needs in the community. The selected project was the reforestation of Arevalos Park. With the assistance of volunteers and the Park, Tree and Landscape crews, the project was completed with the planting of 18 Crape Myrtle trees, 25 Western Redbud trees, 8 Photinia trees, 1 Tipu tree, and 100 Lantana flowering shrubs. The long day provided over $13,000 of improvements to the park. Afterward, the hard-working group was rewarded with shade and a pizza party.
