Traffic Bureau

Our Motorcycle Officers ride the Kawasaki 1000, the Honda ST1100P, and the Honda ST1300P

The Traffic/Aero Bureau is commanded by Lt. J. Cottriel and consists of 2 motorcycle Sergeants, 1 Administrative Sergeant and 18 Motorcycle Officers, 2 of which are assigned solely to DUI enforcement. Additionally, there are up to 14 full time parking control officers monitoring parking meters and enforcing street sweeping and other parking problems within the city.

The primary function of the Traffic/Aero Bureau is to provide for safe movement of traffic within the City of Huntington Beach.

Our Motorcycle Officers investigate traffic collisions and assist uniform patrol officers. There are two field Accident Investigation Officers. Their primary duty is the investigation of traffic collisions. They are tasked with the enforcement of traffic laws and assist the patrol officers with their duties. There are two traffic investigators specifically assigned to followup on major traffic collision and hit and run investigations.

During the Calendar Year 2006, there were a total of 3250 collision reports taken by the department. The Traffic Bureau took 75% of these.

The Aero Bureau operates three MD 520N turbine powered Helicopters out of the hangar facility. It is owned and operated solely by the city of Huntington Beach expressly for city police and fire operations. Only emergency operations by other police agencies and our own are permitted landings and departures. It is self sufficient, with complete maintenance and underground fuel facilities at the hanger.

Additionally, there are up to 14 full time parking control officers monitoring parking meters and enforcing street sweeping and other parking problems within the city.

The unit is comprised of six police officer/pilots, one police sergeant/pilot, two mechanics, one part time secretary and one part time student worker. Five of the pilots are Certified Flight Instructors which allows us to do all our own training. This saves the city tens of thousands of dollars each year. Our training program is very intense due to the type of flying we do as police pilots.

In 1984 we began using the MD 520N model helicopter for patrol equipped with the "Quiet Night " package, a four-bladed tail rotor (tail rotors make the majority of the helicopter noise). In 1992 we put our first NOTAR, MD520N, in service. We now operate 3 MD520N helicopters. This is the latest in quiet helicopters because it has no tail rotor. It was designed to be 30% quieter than the previous tail rotor models. (Select the picture to see more information on the Aero Bureau.)
