Flood Preparedness

The Huntington Beach Fire Department Emergency Management and Homeland Security Office has prepared the following information regarding preparing for a flood emergency. Water damage caused by flooding is costly and it is important to be prepared for this type of emergency. Before a storm strikes, you can take the following steps to increase safety and minimize damage:

  • Keep a stock of food on hand which requires little cooking and no refrigeration.  Electrical power may be interrupted.
  • Have a supply of at least one gallon of water per person per day for each family member
  • Keep an extra supply of prescriptions.
  • Have flashlights and extra batteries.
  • Have a portable radio so you will receive emergency instructions from your local radio stations.
  • Keep your automobile fueled. If power is out, gas stations may not be able to operate and you may have to evacuate your family.
  • Keep materials like sandbags, plywood, plastic sheeting, and lumber available for emergency waterproofing.

Make sure your family is safe.  Get prepared for floods!
